Pal, I feel your pain, I tried the SilverStar Ultras and while they provided a lot more light in the Tahoe (reflector lamps) they really didn't help in the Crossfire (projector lamps). I went with HID's and THAT was what worked. I moved the SS's to the high beams and am really happy.

Is there some reason you wont go to HID's? They are less expensive than SilverStars?

I couldn't see very well either and the HID's made a huge difference. Don't waste your time and money on anything else. You will be amazed at the difference.

The Sylvanias do make a difference but I notice that they burn out quicker than a stock bulb so be prepared for that.

The difference with HID is like night and day. Either way you have to remove the bulb which is a PITA. Out of all the mods I have done to my car, I have always considered the HID's to be one of the best mods I have done.

Hey GG, you might want to consider going to an eye doctor and having yourself tested for the beginning of cataracts. I had the symptom of headlights and street lights having halos around them and the beginning of night blindness. After having the cataracts corrected, no more problems. I realize you're younger than I, but it happens. Just sayin ......

+1 on the eye tests, it may get to the point where you cannot drive at night. There are other eye problems that can be solved now but not when they have progressed too far.

I have HID's in the lows and I thought I would put Silver Star Ultras in the highs. Well, I got the bulbs mixed up and ended up with an OEM bulb in one high and a Silver Star Ultra in the other, without noticing my mistake. They looked the same to me and even when I noticed an odd set of bulbs in the bench I could not tell which bulb was a Silver Star Ultra when they shone on my white garage wall.

The high beam lights looked like egg yolks sitting above the white of the low (3500k) HID's.

I will try Osram 65W Rallyes in the highs when I can be bothered to correct my mistake.

DDMtuning.com has high quality HID's. (I have purchased 3 sets from them)

$50 for 2 bulbs (choice of color), and two ballasts.

Though I just ordered a 55w slim ballast kit and it took almost 3 weeks to get to me (shipped CHINA post -___- )

Not sure if the 35w ones ship from their store (California), or from China, but it's a great product (and inexpensive), provided you don't mind waiting for shipping!

I would recommend 5000k bulbs for 35w, and 6000k for 55w (I have 6000k and they're extremely bright white).

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Regards,
Eric Henderson

Since a few of you have already played the HID conversion game.. you get what you pay for or? Totally new to them so any advice that doesn't require a new bank note would be appriciated.

First thing I did for my XF (Back in Oct 09, three months after purchase) was replace the OEM high and low beams with Silverstar Ultras. Having a set of regular silverstars in my Ford truck for over 4 years, I thought it would be a long lasting mod. They have been in the car for 25 months now and are still going strong. Very bright and I got both sets from an amazon vendor for less than 30 bucks delivered. I also changed out the fog light bulbs with a 9000 series high beam bulb, that really lights up the road being brighter than the OEM fog light bulbs. The fogs are slightly yellower but the frontal visability is awsome with the ultras and the higher output fogs. I'm glad I did this upgrade, I just hear too many horror stories with HID's. Glad they work out for many of the members just not my cuppa tea.

Same here. Doc says we'll wait a bit, but eventually cataract surgery will be necessary. I put up with the halo for many months till someone else told me it was a symptom of cataracts.

Sounds awfully familiar to me. I lost an eye about 18 months ago, and night driving is a challenge. The Crossfire's OEM dims were poor, in my opinion, and I had to let my wife do most of the night driving when we traveled in it. She didn't consider the lights to be adequate either. I just finished a trip to from northern Mississippi to Tampa and back, on a set of $35 HID lights, and it was a joy!

For the difference, I'll replace them monthly if necessary.

It's reversible if you don't like them, but you will. I suspect that if you buy a set for $300 you'll be impressed and never regret it. If you buy a set for $35, you'll feel the same, but have nearly enough money saved for one new tire.

Read my post #7 and you will see that they do not impress me. I cannot see any difference between them shining on a white wall. I think like all things, if you think they will be brighter it is easy to believe but seeing them side by side is another story.

My verdict is that they are a waste of money, but it's your money. If you read about them on this forum the consensus is that they do not last long.

Sure are, those are super bright. The price was super as well I got them extremely cheap! The bulbs are H7's and they are SS ultras. Both high and low beams were replaced. I took the front facia off to remove the headlight assemblies, trying to get them on the car was (for me) just too hard. I wrote up a nice post here ( https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ight-saga.html ). Oh make sure you do not touch them bulbs with fingers, I wiped them off with isopropyl alcohol and used a dry white washcloth! The fog lights were just regular 9000 series high beam bulbs. They fit a little loose but they did fit. Just make sure your access door is closed real good to guard against splashing water. In 25 months, not a drop of water made it in. They do 'turn and lock' but I had to wiggle them just a little to get them tabs to line up.

I tried a sylverstar bulb years ago when they first came out. The application was 9004 bulb on a 95 Intrepid, known for it's weak light projection. Being skeptic, I replaced 1 bulb for comparaison, couldn't tell the difference from the oem ones.

HID's where it's at!

I put 35w slim line 5000k HID's on the Aero and on my F250..... great improvement... especially for the truck.... I have been driving it for 17 years and night driving was getting worrisome....no issues now..

I'm not trying to be contrary or anything but I don't know how important the fog light door is. I didn't even have any (fog light access panels) for almost 4 years and didn't have any problems at all with the fog lights. I finally did make some out of aluminum though right before CAA-RME.
