Turn Signal Failure
So …. Indicators packed in … hazards work…
garage fitted a new stalk.. still nothing.. moved it from the bay to the yard, indicator’s worked… they came back in the morning indicators not working!!! Plus in taking off the steering wheel to fit the new stalk the airbag light has come on…
They can’t get it off and they can’t communicate with the car via their diagnostic.,which they say is unusual they have checked the circuits and say they seem to be ok. Any ideas?? It’s driving me mad!!!

So turn signals do not work but four way hazard flashers do work?
And a new multi-function ("Stalk") switch did not fix this? That would lead me to this test:
Place multi-function lever in LEFT or RIGHT signal position.
If they don't work, slowly press in on the hazard switch. Wiggle it. Jiggle it. See if moving the switch gives you a spot on the travel of the switch that enables turn signals. This would indicate that the normally-closed section of the hazard switch that feeds 12 volts from the ICM output is bad. That means you did not need a multi-function switch at all. (Power for hazards comes from fuse 35 thru the hazard switch. Power for turn signals comes from fuse 4 in the ICM. This power is switched by the Hazard switch's contacts.)
The actual flasher is in the Body Control Module. But its fine because the Hazards work.
I think your hazard switch is bad OR the multi-function switch was bad and they didn't get the connectors plugged in right when they put the new one in. Also, they apparently did not get the airbag squib wire connector plugged in right, either, and the ORC (occupant restraint controller) detects this and is trying to warn you.
Many owners here in the states have replaced their multi-function switch themselves and most had no problem. It is a common failure item as our cars age. I think your shop is the real problem here.

I've been working on documenting how the turn/hazards work, since you finally got me to accept the challenge to do so.
Based on what I have learned, and taking into consideration the two issues they left you with (airbag issue and turn signal issue but working hazards) - I have come to the SOLID conclusion: They did not secure the connector in the column housing that connects the multifunction switch and airbag squib to the harness going up under the instrument cluster. From the diagrams, it looks like this is not the same connector, but that they failed with two connectors.

I found an excellent You Tube video that shows how to repair a xfire turn signal stalk/switch. It appears the primary cause in many cases is directly related to poor electrical connections at the various switch contact points. The video demonstrates how to clean the various contacts. Corrosion seems to be culprit resulting in many switch assemblies being replaced unnecessarily.
I highly recommend watching this video

The hazard lights are controlled by the module inside the three button module which has the red emergency flasher button in it.

Hi Pizzaguy
thanks for the information..this is now driving me bonkers ..I got an auto electrician (with good feedback etc) to come and have a look..he got rid of the airbag light by telling his snap on diagnostics computer that the car was a 2004 slk 320 ..(my suggestions). So that’s sorted but after checking all the fuses etc he concluded that the BCM module was a fault and proceeded to take it out along with I think the engine management unit: I’ll come back when you have it fixed or get a replacement he said… so now I am stuck with a car that won’t go untill I either put it all back together or get a new (second hand ) unit and give him a call.
Arrgghhh!!! To cap it all my work bag was in the trunk and now I can’t open it!!! These things are sent to try us

The guy does not know what he's doing. If the hazards work, then the BCM is fine.
Jeezzz. "Auto Electrician", what the hell is an "auto electrician"? Apparently, it's a guy who thinks he knows, but doesnt.
I know that diagram is hard to understand, but it is clear that the flashing function is in the BCM. If the hazards flash, the BCM is FINE.
Did he even use a voltmeter to verify he had power going from the hazard switch to the BCM? If the normally closed side of the Hazard switch fails, you will not have turn signals but you will have hazards.
The other explanation is that the multifunction switch is bad or it's connector is loose. Either would give you hazards but not turn signals.

Many thanks yet again, it's so difficult to find out anyone who k n owe what they are doing with this car in the uk, I'm going to put everything back together and double check the hazard switch myself .. I'm a little tired of paying £££ to
people who promise a fix and don't deliver

so !! Finally got the turn signals fixed …found a local German car specialist with old school mechanics… took holing 3 hours to test and trace the fault to a scorched connection behind the fuse board… !!!
