Default Covertable top seams

I recently bought this 07' Roadster, and I suppose the previous owner never put the top down. Because after I had cycled it about 15 times the seams on what looks like a new top started opening up. Gotta say I was pretty stunned they were only heat sealed and not stitched. Started with about 6" of the passenger side just above the rear window started opening up. My wife is pretty good with this sort of thing, but she could really only access the area next to the window.
So I decided to remove the top, after doing some research, I found some video's and some recommended "glue" for doing this. This is not my first convertible top issue, just my first Crossfire top issue. I also took care of where the window was starting to separate.
I am very surprised how well it went, but If it happens again, I think I will get a beige one from these folks. Unless someone knows a better vendor? Has anyone else had this issue, how was it resolved?

Top off,

BAS is where most Roadster owners get their replacement tops. Search the Forum & you'll find lots of threads & postings.

I have some comments:

1) Your ability to use the forum, create neat links - excellent. I suspect you will be a great addition to the community.
2) The fact you pulled the top off and fixed it and put it back on tells me two things about you:
  • You are NUTS. I've never bother with all of that, Id' just replace the damn top
  • You are totally capable of doing what few of us ever try to do, and can change the dam top yourself. You WILL be a great addition to the community.
BAS is simply the best out there. My opinion: That top is old and looks crappy, I doubt you can get it to look nice no matter your skills and effort. Get a new top - it's only going to cost you the top, you can do the work yourself. A good set of tires will cost you more and last only a short time, where a new top will probably last over ten years, since I already know that you will take care of it.

WELCOME to the forum. Very happy to have you here. We have members who are good with top replacement, but most are not active on here.

Expect me/us to direct inquiries about DIY top replacement to YOU.
Be it so recorded....

The top really does look better then the photos, it's just dusty from the Plywood I fetched out of my wood shop.
Never underestimate the power to save a buck, just dont overestimate the results. : ]
Truth be told, I have already contacted BAS, to get a quote in US currency. Price including shipping is certainly competitive.

I had mine done in Indy by a reputable shop. Have not found my receipt to share but this top really is nice and nicely priced. Last one in inventory where ever his supplier was. Maybe some of you will recognize it.

Wasnt really sure where to post this, so just added it to last summers post.
So I received my new Top from BAS about a month ago, and finally got it on last weekend. For those of you who have used BAS before, yes Becca is still there and very helpful. Anyway I decided to get the Tan Top because the black one is super hot in South Louisiana. Not sure how traditionalist might think about that, but?
Anyway, even though there were no instructions it was really quite straight forward, of course I did this last summer as well so. BTW, my repairs on the old top held up quite well, except for the window on one side was starting to open up more then I would of liked.
First thing I would like to mention about the finished product, it was so tight I could not fasten the front latch without the wife turning the handle while I was pressing down from the outside. Gotta say I was quite nervous, so I wrote Becca, and she told me this was normal, 4th day now and it has loosen up some, least I can fasten it myself. After getting the old one off, I had the Wife replace the elastic on the Frame Straps. All in all it only took about 3.5hrs in 96deg heat.
My Top is still having issues when left for a few days, while waiting for the Wife to finish the straps, I checked all the switches I could find (this was an after thought) and they all worked fine. Sometimes the Top works just fine, then the rear deck goes up about 4 inches and stops. But I found Pizzaguys Thread so I think we will get to the bottom of the issue soon.

Still havent figured out why/where my Batt drain went, but still got my fingers crossed.

Set in Sun to stretch

Before the Wife reworked the Frame Straps

That's an EZ On top (the black one in the last pictures). My car came with it when I bought it over a year ago. I have no idea how old it is. The glass is sewn in, not glued in.
I'm one of those "traditionalists" and I think that top looks great on your car! Much better than the traditional black top.
Great choice!

Tan on blue looks great! It might be tough to keep clean though.

1) Is the engine running when this happens?

2) Measuring the current with a meter is the only way to know what is going on. I do not know if you are doing that or not, just know a test with a meter will get you farther than any other method.

1) Sometimes I just have the key on, not the engine. I noticed also that the Top Switch light blinks when it's not working, and a few miles down the road, sometimes I will get a beeping that has no indicator, but is timed with the Switch light.

2) Yeah, but it's simply gone, just like you told me, after you turn off the car the draw is about .8, then after about 2 min it drops to .03. Puzzling where the draw went?

I always have the engine running to ensure steady voltage.

It takes a couple of minutes for the computers to shut down, normal.

Hi @Tickfaw Joe maybe you can help me with a question.
My friend also has split seams on his convertible top. He is wondering if it is possible to glue the seams on the car without removing the top?
The obvious answer is to replace the top, but he can't afford to do this right now so he is looking for a temporary fix.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
John

Sorry John just saw this,
I dont think he can glue that, especially there.
But removing it isnt as bad as it seems. I used this video and
this glue this glue
.
Make sure to set the glue in the Sun to soften it up, and use a good Calk Gun.
He will need to drill out 8 rivets and replace them, the rest is really quite simple.
Take care, Joe
