Wouldn't be too difficult here. We have a 'no chase' order. We begin the traffic stop, and if they run, we radio to county control, and if the state boys want it, it's theirs. If they don't want it, the perp gets away with it.

I can't believe this thread has any interest today after the news out of Knoxville.

The police deserve respect. Sure we all play the edge a bit. I run mine fast when the conditions permit. But when and if he law steps in, just pull over and take your due. If not out of respect for the safety of the officer then do it for those whom you don't even know.

Don't include the poor innocents who were not invited to your foolishness. Speeding away puts other's at risk. Attempts to out run the police endangers folks and their properties because you are not focused on safe driving. You are focused on elluding the law. That's not fair to those around you.
If you have the gonads to do 120 - 150MPH then man up.
Pull over, be respectful and take you due.

Or don't do the crime!

If you did that in arkansas, they would strap you in the "crazy chair" and if you dont cooperate, its stun gun squaredance fun!

What news? Maybe I live under a rock or something, but I have no idea what you're referring to.

Check in the general forum under Knoxville policman shot today...

It relates because a lack of respect for the law is why this officer was shot. Some of the posts actually suggest the police deserve it.

Read my posts and you will know where from I come.

You can't out run a radio. That's why I wouldn't even consider it if I was that willing.

While on a sport bike... I hardly call it out running the cops... In all honesty I have ran from cops once on bike simply because a quick twist of the wrist... and a few seconds later its over because by the time the cop gets to the speed u were going... its already too late cuz ur gone. I would never conceive of actually becoming involved in a true chase simply because it would be extremely selfish to put the officer or anyone else through that.
There was one instance however where I seriously contemplated making a run for it because of the sutation. My buddy just put a new set of gears in his mustang GT and we wanted to see how our cars matched up. So we went out late at night in the middle of no where and did a few runs. On our last run, we took off and by the time we were going 70 an officer was quite a distance behind us coming for us. For a second or two... I sat there half throttle weighing my options (i was in front at the time... so I could maybe pull it off). The only reason it even crossed my mind is because the penalties in AZ for drag racing are extremely harsh. I believe its 7 pts. on the record, and the car would be impounded, plus possible jail time. This was a while ago, so I may be slightly off on the details of the penalties. My reason got the best of me and I pulled over and shut her down. I turned my hazards on, put the keys on the seat next to me(i guess I did it so the officer wouldnt worry I would take off) and got all of my paperwork out. I was sure that at the least my car would be impounded and i would spend the night in jail. The officer spoke to my friend first and i had no idea what they were saying. Shortly he arrived at my car, with the veins popping in his forehead. He proceeds to tell me what a dumba$$ thing that was and that I better never do that fukcing bu1lsh1t again(word for word). I dont blame him at all for being pissed, it was a stupid thing to do. Anyways, he then told me that he was on another call and didnt have time for my crap, then he got in his car and left..... Moral of the story, GOOD THING I DIDNT RUN!!!! Imagine what could have happened.... its never really worth it. Not even on a bike

who brought this thread alive again, you should be running from the police...ok, just 1 word of advice while I sit here "on duty", yes we can now play on the puter while working, if you live in a small town, we already know who you are and where you live. Large cities, prolly not...might even be lucky to catch you...we don't win them all, but you are taking a risk of injurying yourself or others, so it bad judgement on your part...as the question do officers speed, yes we do...we put our pants on, go to work everyday just like you, and I like the old saying "sometimes you get bear, somtimes the bears gets you"...its just a job just like yours...if you don't want attitude, don't give attitude...just my thoughts...oh, if you don't like cops, don't be around cops...go hang out somewhere else...Doc

I dont pull over until the flashing lights are right behind me... So if I can slip away before that happens.. well.. so be it.

Ive had cases where the cop gets right on my *** with lights ablaze.. and I pull over.. and he passes me.. So I dont pull over until Im sure Im the one he wants.. and when pulled over.. I am over polite and nice. Golden Rule.

Ok, I quess I am bored, pulling a double today, so here goes...when I was an FTO, I used to set with rookies running radar, sometimes moving, sometimes stationary...he or she would have to learn to guess your speed within 5 mph, then check you with radar to see how close they were...some are very good at it...thus you learn not to even pay attn to anyone who isn't speeding only those who are. So, case in point #1 you had to attract their attn to begin with. Now, once they learn this, I would teach them common sense about who to stop and who not to stop. Point #2...if you are the lead car on a 2 lane w/ 2-3 cars behind you, you are speeding, whether we are moving or sitting still...we might pull out and head your way, but if it isn't safe to get around the other vehicles, then we aren't interested. You in the meantime may have decided to speed up, turn off, whatever, but we had already decided it wasn't safe just to write an infraction UTT. My advice to young officers is always the same, you saw the car, color, type, etc...he thinks he just got away w/ it, so he will speed again, and maybe this time there will not be traffic in the way...we aren't interested in injurying the public for a traffic citation....we would only pursue a felon...Doc

Hey Franc, domestics are the worse runs we get...a lot of emotion going on...but judges let these guys out that need to be jailed long enough to cool down...get over it kind of thing, but no, they spend 1 night in jail and are let out...they are peeved and have made up their mind to do their spouse, girlfriend harm...this is exactly what happened to this officer...the guy who shot him should have been in jail...lucky the wife was peeved enough to run the "b" down and safe us tax payers money...Doc

Doc,

I was never a cop but I spent 13 yers in the fire service and most of that as a paramedic. You and I saw the same stuff. Over and over again, it was the same perps doing the same things and we had to go clean it up.

Running from the police is just dumb. Running from a speeding ticket is a felony in most states, and is even dumber. It is really disrespectful not to mention dangerous. I don't think it's entertaining at all. Cleaned up to much of the aftermath.

You're right, domestics were the worst. High speed crashes with innocents injured just made me cry.

I alway thought it would be a great idea to take 50-60 acres and turn it into a road course with plywood buildings, on and off ramps, the whole nine yards and let the people pay to see what it would be like it a semi-controlled environment. It would also be a good opportunity to let cops hone in their skills and hopefully never use them in real life but have them there just in case. Problem is the insurance policy for something like that would be more than Bill Gates could pay. But it would be fun. Need for Speed type deal.

But in reality, running from the law is about as stupid as one can get while operating a car. They're gonna catch you, Maybe not the first time, but everyone gets their comeupins!

I don't know your personal feelings on the subject, but here in Knoxville the city has a very weak pursuit policy as well. If you talk to the rank and file it is very demoralizing. Plus, in my opinion, the "no pursuit" policys are making the streets more dangerous because the perps know if they run they will get away. I have had perps tell me that they kept running because they thought I was a city officer. (I work for the s.o. much more liberal pursuit policy). T he U.S. supreme court also agrees. In a recent ruling, the court decide that the liability llies with the perp not the department. The tide seems to be changing from "no pursuit" to "end it as soon as posible". Much safer for the public.
