Default Happened near here Sat. evening

This was a beautiful 1973 Z28. No survivors.

What a shame, how many in the car? What did they hit?

It was a tree. This was a show quality car and the driver was only 43.

Only one in the car. The thought at this time is that this was a DWI incident. Approx. 100 miles per hour at point of impact.

Just goes to show. If you are going to be driving fast, you better be sure you are in 100% control. At 100+ one screw up will kill you fast, and kill whatever/whoever else you hit.

Ugly things like this go through my head as I start climbing 120+.
Not pretty!

Yea, but I'll bet you aren't doing 120+ while drunk.

I believe that a crash against a tree at anything above 50mph will require a fairly beefy roll cage, 5-point harness, helmet and a HANS system. At 100mph, you're looking at some very complex crash structures to absorb the impact - especially against a tree, which is essentially a brick wall. A 1970's unibody chassis unfortunately doesn't count.

Don't drive drunk

Man this is one of the worst that I have seen.

Very sad indeed, first for the family and the driver and a very distant 100 a waste for what appeared to be a pretty nice car.

Your right there. I have more graphic pictures but did not post for obvious reasons. The car left the road more than 100 feet before the tree it hit.

Seems in the '70s the entire car was considered a crumple zone. Damn shame.

Do you have shots of this car in its show condition?

Also what other shots did you have? I would be interested if they did not include the people involved in the accident.

This is truly sad. I feel for the families that lost loved ones.

Nate_man,

No I don't have any pictures of the car before this happened. I have many more of the accident though. One of my supervisors is also the Fire Chief that was first on the seen and he mentioned about seeing this car in town on several occasions. He is a car enthusiast as well and can appreciate a great car when he sees one. It was just a one person accident and they do not believe he was racing anyone but just acting up due to drinking. You can see somewhat in the picture but the car folded or buckled in half. The que ball shifter was through his femor.

I had a '71 big block, blue w/ white stripes, just like that car...and to see the unibody folded and the engine/firewall pushed that far back just makes you wonder...my throttle stuck on me one night racing a vette...it stuck cause I had to take the ditch when the vette came over in my lane and I hit the ditch at 100 mph...had to kill it...what a ride that was...I had 5" cragars up front 10" cragars on the rear...this car didn't handle well turning let alone 4 wheelin' in a ditch...glad there weren't any trees....I fought it until I stopped...got out, cleaned my shorts, fixed the throttle, and didn't street race for a long time after that...LOL...too bad for this guy, though

It happened a few miles from my home. I did not know the person but living in a small community (12,000 people) news travels very quickly. I felt I wanted to share this as we all (or most of us) like to have fun once in a while and hope that all of us be cognizant how quickly it can go bad. The guy was a knucklehead as he was drinking and driving. Last year about two miles up the road from me, a guy was drinking and driving and not only almost killed himself, but disabled a Mom of young kid that works for me. Very sad. Ironically, he is a very well known funeral director. He currently is sitting in jail.

I am a big fan of the older camaros, especially with the big blocks. "71 - "73 are georgous cars.

yep, you need all your senses and experience to play at that speed, and better know the road isn't traveled that much...I only play where I have a clear view of my intended run...never more than a mile or two at a time...no crossroads...be even then, ole' bambie can ruin your day at that speed...it's always a risk...
