edumacate me!
in may i moved my 81 yr old mother in my home to live with me. she is a heavy smoker and i knew this before hand. thing is my g/f and child cant stand the smell and i must say its getting to me also.
i cant demand she smoke outside just not fair to her. she has no intention of stopping so im searching for a decent air purifier to buy. i read about neg. ozone and hepa and all that stuff. can someone break it down to me and suggest a unit to buy? looking to keep it under 400$

Absolutely nothing will get rid of the smell of a heavy smoker. The nicotine will impregnate all of the fabrics, draperies, upholstery, etc. Oh, I am on my 3rd smoke free month.
I can now smell the cigarettes in my daily driver even after 3 months. I never noticed it when I smoked. I am doing good, especially since I have been smoking since I was 13.

Make her a special smoking room (perhaps her bedroom) with a top vent....

Commercial HVAC guys can help you with the unit you need and the install...but, remember, it also isn't fair to a kid or your girlfriend...when my mom got out of hand, she is now with my sister...love my mom, but my family comes first...good luck....
unlike you opulent xfire guys my house is a mere 1325 sq. ft! no smoking room for her, i dated a girl for a short time that smoked and used a purifier in the living room. never smelled any smoke. im hoping this will help matters as i was the one who insisted that she move in so i could manage her health better. and no quitting isnt an option. 60 + yrs and she aint gonna quit!
john i have smelled your cigars, sort of like that german heavy metal you listen to. not my cup of tea!

And Steve, you know you love my music. Now if I can get you to quit drinking Canadian beer, we'll be going places.
You may look for a device that uses ozone. My father-in-law recently purchased a device for their house that they just bought to get rid of "smells" in general and it seemed to work. If you are interested, I can get the make and model.
I'm sure I'll regret posting this one -
My 84 year old mother had Alzheimer's and when she got bad we put her into a home. Nowadays all of the homes are smoke free here in Maine and she had smoked since she was 10 so we had a problem.
The first time I came in to see her (actaully the next day) she asked for her cigarettes. Being a wise ***, I told she had never smoke and I didn't know what she was talking about. Instantly I saw a very quizical look come over her face so I pushed the point and reassured her she never smoke.
That night I called alll my familiy and told them what happended and encouraged them to do the same thing. This is what we all did and after about a week she quit asking amnd that was the end of the issue.
Sneaky I know but it worked.

JHM2K - your post reminded me of a couple of summers I worked with my dad when I was a kid, 13 or 14 years old. He smoked cigars and we'd ride from home to downtown DC, about a 45 minute ride, in our Valiant with ac, which sucked. He'd usually go through a pack Phillies every other day, most of which was smoked in the car as we were going and coming to/from work. That was enough to make me never want to smoke, ever. To this day I hate all smoke.
