Question Covid-19 vaccine, what to get and what happened?

.

I have a choice for the Mrs and I, downtown is the 2 part Moderna, out at Shaw AFB is the 2 part Pfizer. Soon maybe, there will be more approved(?). I understand there may be a J&J version asking for approval for emergency use. FYI, none of them are FDA approved outside the emergence use (yet). Am asking any members what you got, and what kind of effects did you experience. If outside the USA, there may be (or not) others in the pipline or used (we here in the USA so far have the two (only) available. So, what did you get, and how was the side effects ( If you don't want it thats OK as well). Thanks for your input either way!

MOD NOTE: If this turns political in any way, the thread will disappear. The individual who turns it political may very well vanish as well.
'Nuff said.

Personally, I have not taken the vaccination and do not need it, as i have natural immunity to most colds, flues and similar virus.

I have a few friends who have had one of the vaccinations, none have reported serious issues, just a 1-2 day illness with weakness, headaches, things like that. Not ALL of them, but two have had mild issues, the others report nothing at all. Seems like the vaccination, like the illness, impacts everyone a bit differently - which makes sense when you think about it.

Last February, I went on an "immunity quest", I was already taking vitamin A, D in the form of cod liver oil for my back and general immunity. I added 1200mg of C and 2000-3000iu of D3. I know many talk of Zinc, but I didn't find that in the homework I did. I've been exposed at work at least twice - I am the oldest (age 60) at work and note that those who have been ill from COVID are younger (age 29-43) non-smokers. Our three smokers have all escaped illness, same as me. Apparently, the smoker's lungs are such an inhospitable place, even COVID can't take up residence there!

I have a few friends who all got the Moderna vaccine. Minor side effects after first dose, mainly soreness where they inject you. The second dose there were more side effects such as severe fatigue, severe headache, soreness in arm, swelling of arm, fever, chills, runny nose and nausea. The side effects lasted a day for most and for one friend they lasted a day and a half. I don't know anyone who has gotten the Pfizer vaccine but I believe it is rated a little more effective for those over 65 versus the Moderna one.

You just have to do us all a favour and donate your body to science, you may pass away during the tests but we will never forget your lack of selfishness.🙂

Are there too little members able to get this yet? I would have thought there would be a larger response for this topic?

I must have missed your original post. I got the Moderna shot two weeks ago. A day after, it felt like Joe Frazier punched me in the arm. I ran a 99.5 deg F. temperature the next day, but was perfectly fine the following day. My wife had zero side-effects. My buddy who is an ER doctor says the second shot of Moderna has a much greater impact. That's based on his observations of other docs who have gotten the second Moderna shot...plus his patients.
The only problem with NOT taking the vaccine is the future likelihood that you will be unable to fly anywhere...especially overseas....or you'll be quarantined for two weeks when you get there.

My wife and I, along with my 92 year old mother got the 1st Moderna shot at our local grocery store (really!).
Our only side effect was a feeling of exhaustion and wanting to sleep for a couple of days. No pain, no headaches, no fevers, just feeling very tired.

A friend had the first shot, I do not know what brand it was and he felt fine, the second shot made him feel sick for a day. He died two days later, run over by a bus.
Just kidding, the second shot seems the worst for most people if they are going to get side effects.
Ignore what PG says only little kids seem safer than older people, get the shot or be prepared to take a big risk.

The vaccine is not well distributed. There are only a few places in AL (something like 6) were anyone who is 65 or older can drive in and receive the shot. Those older than 75 and "essential" workers have it easier, but they must make an appointment in most places; There are a lot more hospitals and clinics available for those in the 75 and essential group. When I made an appointment at the local public health clinic here in town I was given a date of May 6th for my first vaccine. Consequently, I drove one hour and 45 minutes to Montgomery, waited in line (in my Crossfire) for another 4.8 hours to get my first shot of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine this past Wednesday. They gave something like 1500 shots that day at the drive through event. It will be the same setup come 3 March for the follow up shot. I am 72, had no reaction to the shot other than a slight soreness at the injection site. I'm in pretty good health, no prescription meds or underlying conditions.

Hoping the post keeps rolling, as it is an issue that will continue for quite a while. Read every reply and will continue to do so. Mrs and I are going to get the vaccine as it gets more widely received (like many in our situation, we are continuing taking a break on 'mingling'). Our choice right now will be the Moderna but until the needle sticks that may change.

I think you basicly have to take whatever you can get.

I will preface this saying that I have some connections to the Moderna vaccine.

You can take all the vitamins that you like. Being "exposed" really is meaningless term. Unless you've been tested for antibodies, you never got it.

This thing does terrible things to your lungs. I have friends who I have run relays with who, months later, cannot walk up stairs without gasping for air. Their lungs look like a mess with scar tissue.
If you're a smoker, you're playing some serious Russian roulette by not getting the vaccine.

The 2nd shot will generally have a greater reaction because it is a much stronger dose. The Moderna addendum to their filing indicates that there is initial data that their vaccine actually prevents infection.
If the data is accurate, it would mean that you're not spreading it. You can't shed a virus that you're not infected with. I haven't seen the same data from Pfizer but I would be surprised if the results are not similar. Until there is definite evidence that you cannot asymptomatically shed the virus after vaccination, masks are still being recommended, in the interest of safety.

Actually, I have been thinking of my many older friends (and brothers in arms) gathered throughout the years. Way too many were heavy smokers and exposed to harmful chemicals during their service commitments.

Good question, if the vaccination only lasts for a few years then no doubt people will still be getting the shot every few years.
It is predicted that there will be other pandemics, let’s hope that vaccines can be produced for them otherwise .............

I don't think it will last that long, Dave. The CDC says:

Fauci seems comfortable being more specific than the CDC, but even he won't promise anything, of course. It's way too much to post here, ya gotta read the entire response.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...ng/ss-BB1bsOiD

Just a snippet:
But data from similar coronaviruses may provide some insight, according to the nation's leading immunologist. In the 2002 SARS outbreak, for example, those who came down with the virus were naturally immune for over a year, though their immunity eventually waned. "So the bottom line is we don't know right now how long it lasts," Fauci said of immunity from the COVID-19 vaccine. "But it likely would last for a full year's cycle."

A full year is better than nothing and certainly better than 90 days, but I don't read anything that even hints at more than a year.
MY CONCERN is that, while it is 'free' now, it won't be free every year. Given that it will take an unknown amount of years for it to mutate to the point of no real threat, I suspect we will be budgeting for this expense in future years.
