Anyone here into E-bikes ?
For those who like cycling- E-bikes
Just got into E-bikes.. Last Christmas we bought one for our 19 year old grandson living on our remote Ozark Property. The plan was for him to have a legal but useful method of driving to a local grocer some 6 miles away from the house on all dirt/gravel roads. It arrived and i assembled it ( 5 hours) and test drove it around the neighborhood.
It was so much fun to drive, more like an electric Mo-ped than a bicycle, that I fell in love and wanted one for myself. It came and I assembled it (3 hours this time) only to have the wife confiscate it for herself. So, we ordered another one.
.
This Mo-ped version reminded me of my 1970 Suzuki 185 "collegiant" that I drove 30 miles to work daily winter and summer when first married. Light weight and fun.
Yes, the E-bike brought healthful cycling back and my 15 speed racer has spent too much time in the garage of late. So now instead of wondering if the wife and I can go on biking trips, we are eagerly planning them with our neighbors who currently have E-bikes.
We are all in our 70's, so this is going to be great.
E-Bikes are still in gestation so from a technical and legal perspective, there is a lot of unknowns ahead. But also, a lot of fun.

Hi Frank!
When Jess & I were in Montana last summer we met a lady with a E-bike up on the side of a mountain. She had driving it up a long rough dirt road to get it near a Medicine Circle. Looked like a lot of fun. She had gone first class as her bike cost $5,000.00.
Park rangers would not let her go up the pedestrial trail with it as it was motorized (something to be aware of). Enjoy the ride but be mindful we don't med well, be careful.

Electric version of the sixties Mo-ped. They were fun along with the Hondas. In the eighties the Yamahas (YZ-250) Past reinventions that were all fun.

But then Cathy bought me out, lock, stock, and barrel.
Going on 58 years of it.
Yes, a pedestrian walkway is forbidden. Sidewalks in cities are forbidden as well. All for most bikes.
E-bikes are fairy new and growing . HP is limited "techneacally" to under 28 MPH. Many states are beginning to enact legislation limiting E-Bikes like motorcycles. Depending on top speeds and HP.
My three bikes go 28MPH and can be easily modded to40 MPH. The laws currently vary widely from state to state with New York and New Jersey being the most draconian so far. Cities are also passing their own regulations.
E-bike prices are dropping from several thousands of dollars to many under $300.00 making them very affordable to many households.
This summer will see a lot of proliferation as the number of E-bike owners increases exponentially.
So far, Missouri has been reasonable. But things change.

I get the feeling there will be very strict laws enacted soon for them in many states. I live in neighborhood that has around 90 houses and there is a group about 10 kids that fly around on them. Looks like a blast. You would not believe the amount of people complaining about it. They look at me like have two heads when I tell them they get out of road when a car comes by and I like to see the kids outside having fun. If our village had a police department, they would probably report them.
Lorne has been riding E-bikes for 6 years now, Presently on a E-trike Enjoy a lot Have put over 10,000 KLM on them, May have to cut back ,I will soon be 93. So all you young's GO FOR IT. Lorne

ONE) no riding on sidewalks
TWO) stop at stop signs, something every standard Bilke, normal or E-bike, is required to do.
THREE) obey speed limits. Something every standard Bilke, normal or E-bike, is also required to do.

I don't mind responsible people who obey the law to enjoy them. However, where I live in NJ we have a problem with kids and illegals riding them all over the place at high speed and not obeying any laws.
They don't wear helmets and I almost hit one at night. He had all black on and no lights on. Thankfully they are cracking down on them.
Soon they will be required to obey the same laws as motorcycles. They will be required to have a license, registration and insurance.
This is the way it was with mopeds. These e-bikes should be no different in my opinion.

Sadly, we will all pay the price for this.
A driver's license changes nothing.
