Default What switch goes here?

Today's "Pizza Mystery":

Ok, I'm doing a little digging around in my car (described in my sigline). Now, after taking that trim panel thing out from around the shift (that contains the left and right window switches) I took a close look at that piece.

Flipping the thing over, I see that on the DRIVER'S side, ahead of the window switch, is a cutout and holding tabs for a mystery switch. The pocket that holds this mystery switch is the same length but a bit wider than the window switch.

So, what switch goes here? Does anyone know what they were planning for? The black part glued to the bottom of the chromed trim panel has a place for a third switch - obviously they were planning on using the black frame with a DIFFERENT chrome trim panel.

I just gotta know - what switch goes here and in what model/version of the car????? I'd like to see if that trim panel is available and I'll order it. MY switch could, possibly, go there and look "original".

Thanks, all!

(Oh, and the passenger side has no extra provision for a switch, not that it matters, just pointing that out.)

It could very well be where a MB switch would go.

A Mercedes Benz switch? What would that do - turn the car into an SLK???

Or do you mean this trim panel is used in an MB model of some sort?

I looked into that a while back, the SLK had a switch in that hole, can't remember what it was for though. They didn't change the substrate piece for the Crossfire, they just changed the upper part.

Yes.........these parts are shared with the SLK. As an example If you remove the Chrysler logo from your key fob, it has the MB star.

I had no idea the SLK's genealogy went that far in the Crossfire... I knew about the electronic modules and engine and (I guess) transmission.... but trim pieces?

Again, not much "Chrysler" here, is there?

Well, thanks guys. I guess I COULD perhaps order the MB trim part and then the Switch as well.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Something to consider.

The passenger airbag off indicator light goes there. On our cars, it's located in between the ashtray and the lighter socket. BTW, the tabs are NOT the same as the switches in our cars but rather are almost identical to the mirror switch tabs.

Well, like I said, whatever went there was bigger than the window switchs, that's for sure.

So, I guess ordering that switch is out of the question - 'cause it aint' a switch.

Just as well, it would have cost an arm and a leg that I can't afford or justify anyway.

Ok, in MY car, the "Instant Cool" switch goes there.

Answered my own question! What do I need YOU guys for?

Instant Cool switch? What's it do? Sounds pretty cool, pun intended!

Thanks for asking, but I SUSPECT you have already done the same mod, from what Jason says. I will be very descriptive for others reading this, since I think you already know what I am doing, Rudy!

I don't like the way the brains let the water jacket get too warm (what is it, 210 or 221F or something like that?) before it turns the fan on. It bugs me to see the temp needle climb in 56F weather, let alone in 90F weather.

Well.....

I read on here how the fan module has an "emergency mode". If the fan module does not see the pulses from the ECM (or is it PCM?), it "assumes" something terrible has happened and runs the fan at full speed.

So, I cut into the PWM wire at the Fan Module and ran two wires up to the console and put in a switch. In the normal setting, the switch is closed and all is normal.

When I turn the switch 'on', I am actually turning it off and opening the switch - causing the fan module to "freak out", because it loses it's pulses - and it runs the fan at full warp speed.

Sure keeps the needle from moving!!! I use this in city traffic OR if, for some reason, I want to let the engine idle a lot (which I seldom do.)

Sounds like a jet engine under there (which is what Jason said YOUR car sounded like at least once at the Dragon. )

While this will sorta work, you're not just causing the fan controller to go off the deep end but you're also making the ECU think there is a problem with the cooling system too and it takes action by holding the engine back (pulling timing, running richer, ect.) This is VERY evident with the SRT side as it will not even let the SC clutch engage. There's a reason that it gets a conditioned PWM signal from my module, to keep things from doing this.

I KNEW you would know!

Ok, riddle me this: how does the ECM know the circuit is open? I could tell it knows, because it turns on the low coolant light - close the switch, light goes right out. The only way I can see, is that there is a load resistance in the Fan Module and the ECM can sense the lack of load.

Or............ (and I haven't checked this with my scope) the pulses I saw before the mod were not all from the ECM. Perhaps the Fan Module sends pulses back along the same line to the ECM?

Not that it matters, but have you ever scoped the PWM circuit with the line between the two open?

EDIT: Just saw your last sentence. ROFL! I KNEW IT!
Are your modules for sale? Me first, everyone!

The switch that goes there is the hardtop open/close switch from slk 320. Got this out of the slk320 owners manual.

yes, Rudy, fan mod? I haven't even touched the gauges yet Rudy, work work work, you know do it while you can...if that fan mod is ready, I might have to leave more money in with the gauges...lol

I could see pizzaguys mod being useful for after a hard pull, mountain run or something... letting the car idle with the fan on at full speed.
obviously i wouldnt use this while driving around.
but the ecu adding fuel and pulling timing is a moot point at idle.
but it does sound useful for high temp days stuck in traffic or as previously stated, after a mountain run, etc
