Default Key programing

This is straight from the Crossfire manuals supplied to the dealership, or if you are a Chrysler tech, I got it from Tech Connect.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING

The Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter(s) can be programmed by the customer without special tools.
PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

Transmitter programming by the customer is done by performing the following steps:
Insert the key into the ignition switch.
  1. Press either the lock or unlock button momentarily twice.
  2. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within 30 seconds.
Hope this is useful and saves you $100.

Nightrider,
Thanks for posting this very useful information!
I think you should post it on the "Tips" section of the main forum.
For all to see.

Battery in key bob went dead, replaced battery and would not lock or unlock doors. Tried your information and it worked. Thanks.

Does this only work with keys that have been previously programed for the particular car?

About a year ago I purchased 2 replacement key cases. Both now start the car but one will not remotely unlock/lock the doors remotely.

Have gone through the point and click and the insert key and click twice process.

Have I missed something?

I should add that I have purchased to key fobs - 1 crossfire, 1 Mercedes- on ebay that I am unable to program.

This tip needs an update. Title indicates we can program keys. Not totally true. We can only program keys previously programed for the car. IE RE-PROGRAM existing keys.

I guess if I have studied the 138 updates I would have found the answer.

All we need to know about keys can be written in 1 page.

You do realize how easy it would be to access any car if "any fob" could be programmed in? You could easily park by one.. as the owner approaches and gets in the car.. click twice and wait for them to start and your good to go.

That would make for one "ignorant" security system design ..

Follow the steps in post #1 and it should work if it worked before.

My local dealer wants $188 for the replacement key (already cut I presume), and $130 for reprogramming.. haha.

Somebody mentioned few years back they got a get for $50some from their dealer.. thats reasonable..

And they come ready to work with your ignition, and you program the car to accept the remote unlock yourself, no visit to dealership needed.

Crossfire has been starting fine. Stopped at the store. Got back in. Would not start. Does not turn over. Lights Radio worked. Changed batteries in Key. Did reprogramming as in the beginning of this post. Still didn't start. Tried jumping. Still nothing. Anyone have a suggestion before I have it towed to Dealer?

Is it automatic or straight drive just a shot in the dark but could be the neutral safety switch. Also check all your fuses.

The batteries in the remote are ONLY used for unlocking and locking the car with the buttons.
My suggestion is Search on RCM solder joints after you rule out other obvious issues.
One other thing. Did you try to start it and fail , then try again? The key must be fully turned left before each starting attempt. (not actually removed, but all the way to the lock position)

Six posts and five were about selling your car, I guess it helps to have it working when the FOR SALE sign goes on it.

Hey everyone, I just want to be clear on the reprogramming of the key fob and maybe figure out my problem. I searched the forum and tried the procedure but the fob buttons still don't lock/unlock. So here's what I'm trying:
1. Insert key into ignition
2. Double tap lock button (or unlock button, tried each one)
3. Turn ignition to "ON" within 20 seconds.
After doing this and driving home the fob still doesn't lock/unlock.

I've also read about resetting the fob by holding down the lock & unlock buttons until the red light blinks twice. I tried that too and seemingly every combination of the reset and reprogram procedures but still no good. Also, I replaced the battery in the fob thinking this was the issue because for a couple weeks prior to the fob totally failing (to lock, not to actually start the car. That's never an issue) I'd have to get closer and closer to the car for it to read the key. Then after replacing my clutch and having the battery disconnected for a day the keys stopped working. If the experts could offer some aid or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. I apologize if I simply missed the answer in the forums somewhere. Thanks!

One method.
To synchronize the key fob transmitter
This may be required after replacing the batteries or when receiving a replacement fob.
Directions as stated in the Owner Manual.
 Aim the transmitters red eye at the vehicle.
 Briefly press the lock or unlock button twice.
 Within 30 seconds, insert the key in the ignition.
 Turn the key to the ON/Run position.
The remote control function should again be operational.

Second method
PROCEDURE
Transmitter programming by the customer is done by performing the following steps: Insert the key into the ignition switch.
1. Press either the lock or unlock button momentarily twice.
2. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within 30 seconds.

Get hold of James or Josh at:

Rob is another choice at:

Or, go to a Chrysler dealer and be told they are not available, but they are.
