Default Starting Issues

Hello, My wife and I bought a 2005 Convertible about 4 weeks ago, the car started acting up about a week ago and we would attempt to start the car, power to all the lights and instruments but would not try to turn over. Wait a little and then the car would start. The battery was load tested and then replaced, same problem two days later. Tried disconnecting the two cables based upon a suggestion and then reconnecting them and the car still did the same thing. Started this afternoon drove it a short distance and the car did not start - several hours later it did start. Any suggestions?

Send it to where? Do you mean the connections should be re-soldered?

don't bother soldering it ,, you need a relay replaced.

For clarity I am in the UK. Just Curious how much a new RCM costs in the good old US of A. I have just found a supplier of "NEW" units in the UK and they are asking £165 this is about $200. Is this about right?

Cheers
Mark

Do this.

Get in car, turn key to START, if the starter does not engage, release key so it goes back to "on".
Wait 30 seconds.
Does the engine fan warp up to high speed? (You WILL hear it.)

If yes:
It is almost certain the RCM's engine control relay output is bad. THis can be due to fractured solder on the RCM, bad relay on the RCM, blown fuse number 2 on the RCM (not your issue because yours starts at times).
A replacement RCM would probably fix this. It is POSSIBLE you have a low battery, but in such cases, letting the car sit won't make it start later on. My money is on the RCM.

If no:
We have some more detective work to do...

Hi guys I’m new here...
Just wanted to say thanks... I read this thread and realized that my RCM was acting up. I was have the issue where the car wouldn’t start and the fan would warp to high speeds..
I removed the RCM re soldered the 3 pins, i also noticed that one of the relays had slight charring and was stuck closed... I cleaned it out and viola! Started immediately.

Buy a new one and send the original to TJ for a rebuild and keep it for a spare. The other relays will fail eventually.
