I think the first time I started going there was with my Brother in 1960 when he used to race his '57 Chevy. I'm really going to miss that place.

Now you guys got me thinking about the "good ol days" did anyone ever race at Sunset? an old 1/8th mile track in Mercer Pa. When I raced there potholes determined where you staged, but I was too young to know any better, it was all fun to me.

It was a long time ago, I think it must have closed the very late 70's or early 80's. I raced a lot from 75' to 80' I was only sat Sunset a couple of times did most of my racing at Thompson. Had the most fun before I thought I was getting good and started spending $$$.
With respect to the issue of old cars vs. today's cars let's consider my '71 Demon.
It was fast (in a straight line) in it's day, but most any new car is faster now.
Even with the front disc brakes we ordered with it and the traction bars we added to try to control the rear wheel hop under hard braking, braking was marginal then and would be considered poor by any standard today.
With after market anti-roll bars and after market radial tires it handled better than average in it's day, but most any new car handles better now.
While it's not a great drive today, it still looks sharp (in it's original "Green Go" paint) and gets a lot of thumbs up attention, even from today's youth.
What it does best (besides bring back memories) is demonstrate how much better today's cars, even our daily drivers, are.
Don't get me wrong though, to me it's still a keeper.

The Demon driving experience also applies to my friend's '74 Dodge Dart. He replaced his power steering with a manual one but the feel is still soft and wishy-washy. And stepping (or more like stomping) on the brakes eventually results in the car slowing down but I think that has more to do with your foot off the gas then the brakes themselves. But in spite of this, or maybe because of, it's a fun car to toot around in.
