service intervals?
I just posted this under the Coupe section, but I figured it made more sense to post here. I was wondering what the service intervals were for the Crossfire? What do they involve? How can you tell if they have been performed on a car? How much do they cost in general?
I am looking at several Crossfires here in Charlotte at the moment. After my last car purchase (an '01 Eclipse Spyder), I want to make sure the next car I buy is up to date on it's servicing. I bought a car with 54k miles from a Mitsubishi dealership and it was a certified pre owned car, and they hadn't performed the 60k mile service on the car. Turns out that service costs $2,000 to perform. I don't want to get stuck in that boat again, especially with a Crossfire. I imagine their services will be more expensive than a Mitsubishi!
The cars I'm looking at either have around 10k miles or 30-40k miles if this makes a difference. Is there anything in particular I should be aware of while shopping? Are there any common mechanical problems I should look out for? From everything I've read over the years about the Crossfires, they seem to be pretty stout, reliable cars in general. Thanks for your input guys!

Crossfires have the FSS system...basically the car tells you when it's time for routine service (oil changes and the like). For the most part it's about 7,000 miles if you drive like an animal, 10,000 if you are more mellow.
I've never had anyone else work on my car, but from what I understand routine maintenance at the dealer is around $140 and up. I do my own maintenance, it's usually around $70 for a new filter and oil!
Hope this helps somewhat.

I ask because those services on my Eclipse Spyder are crazy expensive. The 30,000 mile services are around $2,000 because the intake must be taken off the car to change the timing belt, spark plugs, wires, etc. I just want to know what I'm getting into with the Crossfire fully because I don't want another money pit like my Eclipse. :-)
No...there's no set intervals. The FSS system tells you when it's time for service.
Mine is every 7,000 miles, because I drive the car like I stole it. Other people here have gone over 10,000 miles before a oil change was even needed.
The maintenance intervals are up to the car. FSS = Flexible Service System.
All the mechanical parts of a Crossfire are from Mercedes. The engine is a 3.2 liter v-6 from Mercedes, trans and driveline from Mercedes. In my opinion, all very mechanically sound, with little need for maintenance!

Thanks for all the helpful info! I know a pretty good deal about the Crossfire... have followed them closely and dreamed about owning one since the first time I saw one in person in late '03. I knew of the Mercedes mechanicals and the Karmann assembly, but had never heard of the FSS system. So I take it no one has to replace stupid things like timing chains and such? Other than the pricey oil changes, they're fairly maintenance free? Does the dealer have to reset something in the car when the oil is changed, or if you do it yourself, does the car know it?
From what I have gathered, Crossfires seem to be extremely mechanically reliable, low maintenance, and good for several hundred thousand miles like any other German product. I just am wanting to make sure I'm an educated buyer this time around. :-) I know tires cost around $1k installed, so I'm prepared for that sticker shock!

You can download the owner's manual here: https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...=owners+manual
It gives detailed information on what is required at each service interval. Besides the oil and filter change, they are mostly checks that most people should be able to do themselves. Besides oil changes, the other main recommended maintenance items are fuel filter at 60K, auto trans fluid at 80K and spark plugs and coolant at 100K.
As far as telling what has been done on a used car, there is really no way to tell unless you get detailed service records from the previous owner. If the service was performed by a dealer, they should have that information in their computer.
