Default Weird sound

Hello guys! this is my first post...

I've had my 04 Crossfire for about a year now. It has around 33k miles. About a week a go I started hearing a wheezing sound. It sounds like is coming from the trunk area but I have not been able to fully locate it. You cannot hear the sound after you start the car, the wheezing only occurs right before I start the car (even before sticking the key in) and right after turning it off.

I haven't noticed anything bad performance-wise anywhere else, but the sound is definitely loud.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If you only hear it getting when getting in and out, before you insert the key, seems to rule out anything electrical or hydraulic, like trunk locks, wing motors or top motors.

When you stop the car, does it happen while you are still in the seat? .. or just as you climb out? If it happens just as you are getting in and out, the only thing I could imagine is maybe a bad shock sucking air.

That is weird. Where's your neighbors cat?

It happens when I'm in the seat still as well but it stops shortly after I get out and open my trunk and start looking/hearing for the sound. Now that you mention the shock sucking air, it certainly sounds plausible. I just didn't know that could happen, but I guess with all the potholes in NYC it wouldn't be surprising if it "broke" or something like that.

PS: Yes, as you can tell I'm not very "mechanical."

Don't take my word. That's a crazy idea. But the sound you describe is crazier.

Only sound you will get from that area is when you put in the key, turn on the ignition, and you will hear the fuel pump under the trunk floor pressurising the fuel system and this lasts a few seconds.

Only other answer is the previous owner left his Whoopie Cusion under the seat!

That's probably it, Steve. Good call.

Daniel, double-check the key-in-the-ignition procedure you described. Your fuel pump could be trying to tell you its sick.

Thanks guys. Fuel Pump, I got it.

Any idea how much is going to cost me to replace that?

Ok, here's a big shot in the dark....these cars are fairly air tight, well at least mine is, my ears sometimes pop when I shut the door. You could have a slight air leakage in the hatch lid gasket. Try sitting in the car and closing the door with the window open or slightly cracked. Do you still hear your strange noise ?
If so, make an appointment to see your proctologist !!!

Welcome to the forum BTW !

Your fuel pump comes on to prime the fuel system, but only when the key is in the ignition and turned to the ON position. This is totally normal !

I still say your neighbor's cat is in the trunk.

Yeah, but why would I hear the sound after I turn off the car? And it only started doing it about a week a go, it's not like it has been doing since I bought the car.

*Just went to check on both of my neighbors. No cats, no dogs. Maybe an opossum?

I think the air pump that controls the locks is in the trunk. If you have a line with a break in it, you might get a sound like that.

I've heard you have rats the size of 'possums in NYC, but no 'possums.
