Default Sensor in grill

Anybody know what this sensor is? I was taking out the left hand lower grill and found a pointed sensor extending out of the grill. Impact/air bag sensor?

Larry,
What you're seeing is the temperature gauge OAT temp probe.

If you disconnect it and turn the car on, your temp reading will be -36 degrees.

(hey, I was bored and I had to look at something while bleeding the brakes! )

Let me guess, the temperature says -32.

Probably. Make sure you are looking at the correct sensor. This sensor is located in the lower louvre on the driver's side. Through a bit of research I believe it actually has two different types of signals being sent from the sensor. One is directed towards the dash to show you the ambient temp and the other signal is sent to the ECU to inform the ECU of changing ambient temps. If the dash sensor reads -36* there is a good chance your ECu is receiving the same. If it is NOT -36* outside this will cause poor gas mileage as the ECU is cumping more fuel to the engine to help maintain proper engine temps (in a -36* environment). Replacing the ambient sensor is a cheap fix, $30 shipped from chryslerparts.net. If your wires are visibly disconnected I would seek out a Chrysler mechanic to diagnose and propose a fix for the issue.

What did you do to remedy your problem?

I really didn't have a problem. I thought that probe was connected to the grill and thought it came off with the grill and no wires connected. Didn't realize the prob stayed connected to the car, I'm a dummy! Sorry for driving everyone nuts. Ron

Is it possible that some Crossfires have different mounting areas for this sensor?
2 years ago I removed both of my lower grilles to install the mesh insert overlays, when I removed those lower grilles, my temp probe was not attached to either of the lower grilles, nor did I see it dangling anywhere. Since that time, my drivers side lower grille fell off somewhere along the road, this in turn caused some damage to my inner fender and all the other plastic pieces behind the bumper and then I noticed the probe dangling by it's wire, now the temp inside the car reads -36. I am in the process of having my SRT bumper cover painted, but I'm also trying to figure out all the other pieces I need to replace. I already have a new temp probe so I will eventually figure out where it's supposed to be mounted.
