Default POWERCHIP GOLD 91 USER

Had the POWERCHIPGOLD 91 upgrade to my CROSSFIRE, and so far I am quite pleased with the results. Definitely noticed the increase in horsepower ( 15-17HP increase ) when I need to move around traffic on the freeways, but, more importantly, the car has increased miles to the gallon. Before I had the modification, I was averaging around 26-28 miles per gallon ( 28 miles per gallon only twice ) on 85% freeway/15% street driving. I got the upgrade last week and on the same ratio of driving, I got 29 1/2 miles to the gallon. Mind you, I jumped on the car a lot more than usual, so I burned more gas than usual, just to feel the acceleration and exhiliration. This week I will take it slow ( 65mph ) and not "jump" on the accelerator. I will post mileage results next week. I am expecting 30 miles per gallon!! Oh yeah and by the way, my XFIRE is a 6-speed manual, graphite gray, sweet drivin' machine, that still turns heads. I am not into racing, but somewhere in this forum there's a guy who posted speed results on his upgrade. AS for me, give me mileage, or give me...

Default POWERCHIP GOLD 91 MILEAGE WEEK#2

On about a ratio of 70% freeway, 30% street, averaged 27.5 miles to the gallon. I will post again at the 3rd week of fill-up.

Default UPDATES ON MPG

The last 2 fill-ups were 28 and 29 MPG on the ratio of 85% freeway and 15% street. The magic 30mpg has not been attained as of yet, and I am wondering if a cruise to Vegas or Laughlin could get me that 30mpg since that would be pretty much 98% freeway driving. When I take that cruise, I will let you all know.

Overall, I am quite happy with the torque and HP increase. On the freeways, my XFIRE gets me around the clogs of cars with the greatest of ease. Accelerating onto the freeway is the same. Is the upgrade worth the $600, for me, yeah. In the long run, each one must make that decision according to their own wallet. One last thing, when I took my X-FIRE for my first oil change ( 5K ), the mechanic that drove my car ( and this is just on the lot ) exclaimed that my X-FIRE felt more power than the other XFIRE he had driven when he accelerated. Not knowing DAIMLER's stand on this upgrade, I told him there was no need for flattery since I would be bringing my XFIRE for servicing at this dealership since that was where I purchased it. He insisted he was not blowing smoke and felt my XFIRE had more pep than other XFIRES he has driven. I said "KOOL".

Still turning heads...

I've been really thinking of getting mine upgraded. I'm still feeling my Crossfire for now so that I'll be able to notice the difference whenever I get mine upgraded.
Thanks.

Is there any effect on the warranty by getting this upgrade? Did you make the upgrade yourself, or take it to a shop? I love my new XFire, but I think it is a bit underpowered and am interested in increasing it.

THanks.

I do not know CHRYSLER's policy towards this upgrade. POWERCHIP assures me that this upgrade will not effect the warranty, but I just don't know. POWERCHIP has a working relationship with DAIMLER, hence this upgrade. Maybe someone on this forum has a more definitive answer. I do know it is just a software upgrade and, virtually undetectable by CHRYSLER service personel so, unless you voluntarily admit to it, they won't have a clue. Also, POWERCHIP assures me that should CHRYSLER accidently burn over the eeprom, POWERCHIP would reload the software free of charge. Of course that opens up a whole new can of worms. One more thing, POWERCHIP offers a 30 day guarantee, so if you do not like the upgrade, they will re-load your old software. Best bet, call POWERCHIP. I believe they have an 800 number.

Lovin' my CROSSFIRE...

Great information. Thank you for the detail.

I had no idea it was just a software upgrade. If it's that simple to increase the horsepower I wonder why Chrysler didn't just make it that way.

Thanks again.

My sentiments exactly. POWERCHIP GOLD 91 requires 91 octane gasoline at all times, while POWERCHIP GOLD 93 requires 93 octane gasoline at all times. Check your area for the octane available. The X-FIRE, as it stands now, can use any octane which is why I believe CHRYSLER has not opted for this upgrade. This way, the average joe/jane can put in any octane gas they want. and with the price of gasoline going up... could be a smart move on CHRYSLER's part. As for the upgrade, the chip is on a board that is easily accessible and pops out. Again, POWERCHIP can help you locate the board in question. They're pretty kool and extremely helpful.

You're right. That actually makes sense. I was just assuming I should only use 91 octane or better. From what you are saying it seems I could save gas money on lower octane until I make the switch.

I appreciate the feedback.

I always used 91 octane, even before the upgrade. Lower octane gas can inhibit your cars performance. I'm no expert on petrol, but even in my '97 Eclipse GST I use 91 octane. Oil changes every 3.5k, tune-ups every 30k, and 91 octane in my Eclipse has given me 113k miles on my motor and it is still going strong. The extra money for the octane is money well spent, in my humble opinion. Any experts out there feel free to chime in.

Default octane

Not exactly so...pages 149 and 222 of owner's manual specifies 91 Octane, and the label by the fuel filler says use Premium fuel only, which generally means 91 or over.

87 and 89 octane is widely available, and while I know sometimes manufacturers overstate the octane needs for a car, I'm going to pretty much stick with the manufacturers recommendations on fuel.

Thanks Kusheen. I totally agree with you on the 91 octane useage. My neighbor who drives a BOXSTER porsche, use 87 octane because it is cheaper. He tells me I am a fool for paying higher octane prices. I tell 'em you will end up paying for motor repairs/carburetor repairs in the long run. Go figure!! THanks for the correction...

I use 93 octane and at the same time put an octane booster from time to time. Its just my own preference since my Crossfire is just a recreational vehicle for day offs and weekend use.

Plus if you use less than 91 in any perfomance car you will start to get knocking or pinging from the engine. Which will kill you engine extremely fast

See the atachment.
However, there are other companies that do ECU tunings at a lot less money.
www.inmotionusa.com
www.tvtdesigns.com

It's all on the forum.

Inmotion seems to be the bang for buck best.
