Default Green Stuff Brake Pad Installation

I need some advice on installing the Green Stuff brake pads. I consider myself to be reasonably mechanical but I have never installed brake pad on any of my cars so I have a couple of questions. In the notes for the Green Stuff pads it states gThese pads are not fitted with original anti-rattle shims. Please DO NOT attempt to fit shims from worn pads onto these units which will cause an over-thickness situation resulting in pad dragh. What does that mean exactly? Are anti-rattle clips and anti-rattle shims the same thing? It also calls for using high temperature brake grease on the caliper piston and on the outside of the pad where it contacts the caliper. Can I buy this grease at any auto parts store? I would really appreciate any advice that you nice folks might have to offer. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about the shims or lack of shims. My doesn't squeal. High temp? unless you are braking from 100+mph on every turn, I think any brake grease will do.

Use silicone grease in the back of the pads and the guides (hooks at either end of the pad) to make sure they don't squeal. I used it in mine and they are great.

I believe the issue with "pad drag" has to do with the pads contacting the rotor with too much force even with the brake disengaged, thus causing a loss of accelleration and fuel economy. Basically, it would be like driving with one foot slightly pushing down on the brake pedal all the time.

Take this guy's comments about EBC Pads for what you think they're worth, but he has instructions with pictures that might help.

Thanks for the help, but one more question. Are there anti-rattle shims installed on the stock pads that will need to be discarded when I install the Green Stuff pads?

Luck!

Where's "Kure Beach"? My folks live in Kitty Hawk and I'll be making a trip down that way soon.

David, Kure Beach is on the southern tip of the NC coast near Wilmington, NC. About 80 miles north of Myrtle Beach, SC and about 250 miles south of Kitty Hawk.

oh... that's more than a day trip... I figured I'd probably run down to Hatteras and/or Ocracoake, but not that far.
