Yeah I know what you mean.. I was really dissapointed when my Mann "fleabay" filter for 10 bucks wasn't in a brown box.

So should I go ahead and just buy a pump online along with the filter? Or should I wait and call Rudy on tuesday when he said he's available.

ask your fleabay dealer if he will overnite you a oem crank pulley free of charge. thats what skyland did for me as a repeat customer when my oem pulley died 3 days before the fontana gtg. they drop shipped me a crank pulley from the main warehouse so i could get it in time to make the meet. sometimes customer service and peace of mind are worth a few more dollars then the cheapest price i can find. and to make it even better it came in the oem brown box!

Real easy to arm chair quarterback when it's not reaching your check book. What part of "limited budget" is half of everyone missing here? When the fuel pump quit on my Chevy I didn't have to have it towed in to the dealer to tell me "your fuel pumps out". Have you taken your car in for diagnostic to know the heating element is out instead of the switch or are you planning on throwing dollars at the element and hoping?
Perhaps you should try reading both my posts rather than just pick the one that you think can try to critisize and mock. In my post previous to the one you took issue with I gave him 2 very simple and FREE tests to try to further isolate the problem but without trying them the OP stated he was just going to go ahead and replace the filter and pump and my 2nd response was to that comment.

So far as my heated seats that you brought up I'm guessing only to try and get a dig in on me personally. No I didn't take it in for diagnostics I diagnosed it myself by doing some electrical testing and knew it was my elements before asking how to replace them but yet again you exclude the facts if they don't work with your agenda. The truth is I never asked what the problem was but rather how difficult it is to replace the elements without damaging the seats. I'm a mechanic not an upolsterer and you're a keyboard warrior not a scholar so why don't you back away from the keyboard and let the adults have a conversation.

Yeah I guess technically you mentioned it if you think asking if our cars have one counts. Yeah your a real wealth of info. I also can't help but laugh that you think mechanics should be well versed upholsters as well. I guess in your opinion being a mechanic I should also be able to do body work and paint as well.

I also have no intention of getting into a pissing match with you but having said that I do want to keep the record straight as to what I have or haven't said and keep it in context rather than just what you can comprehend and/or selectively remember or include when your typing your half baked rants..

I think this thread has six pages of posts, some good and worthwhile advice but the OP decides a plan of action and then changes his mind..... again ....... and ..... again.....

I give up.

Come on 180.. remember when we were young? Holly..Edelbrock..which way do I go..full race cam.. 3/4 cam.. lol. All I''ve tried to do is offer suggestions that fall within his budget, not buy a spare parts car and start swapping out till it's fixed.

A mechanic that was scared to take a seat apart would never touch my car for an oil change. I don't make claim to being a mechanic (3D modeling design and drafting - hows that for an American with a job) but scared I'll ruin my seat.. is laughable. Guess I should be thanking you for that chuckle.[/quote

Wow ! There you go again. I'm not scared of taking my seat apart just cautious and wanted to accumulate as much info on a subject I'm not familiar with as possible before just diving in. Call me crazy but sometimes when I'm working on something I even pull out the service manual. Weird huh ? But I guess being a 3D modeling design and drafting guy you never need to read the instructions/manual and instead of going to school to become one you probably just started typing away on your computer until one day Voila ! 3D modeling design guy.

What's laughable is this idea that because someone is a mechanic they can fix, rebuild and diagnose anything on the road and any component on it. The fact is most of us specialize ie heavy trucks and/or trailers (what I do), cars, motorcycles, etc, and alot even specialize within those catagories ie front ends, upholstery, brakes and exhaust, etc,. Maybe that's why you call yourself a "3D modeling and drafting design" guy and not just "desk worker".

I appologise to the OP. My intention was not to hijack your thread only to give you some free advice and tests you could try with no cost so as to try and solve your issue. For whatever reason MrMiata enjoys picking apart my and other members posts to try and come across as witty at our expense. Witty I think not. Petty ? Probably. I think onehundred80 said it best "I give up"

The simplicity of a seat and your fear of diving in is what makes me question any ability you have. No torque specs to worry about .. .002 clearance factors or otherwise. Having pretty much learned your personality on the seat thread.. well I'll let you respond and get in the childish last word. If I'm not mistaken 180 had enough of you in that thread too.

I do apologize for not being able to make up my mind. As of right now I took the advice you all generally gave me, and I'm waiting to be able to contact Rudy. He did say he can then get me an estimate of how much he would charge for the whole thing for both units being swapped out.

So let's recap: Dealer swapout of unit, but dealing with incompetent mechanics there who don't know Xfires
Self attempt at swapping it out, but having to find the parts online for a decent price within 200 bucks
Call to Rudy on tuesday, and getting quote from him on his help with the whole thing
One member offered to ship me a used filter, and have that swapped in for mine since his was working fine.

Am I missing anything?

Sounds like you now have the parts you need! They are not hard to install either. There is a platic panel underneath you remove just forward of the right rear tire. The pump and rgulator/filter are right there. If you download the service manual it will walk you right through it. it will tell you the tools you need as well. you will need jack stands and venver get under the car with only the car's jack holing it up.

I know you doubt your ability to replace these items.. but take 10-30 minutes..pull your tire and the panel and take a look for yourself? You might be surprised with "eyes on" the setup rather than pictures from the manual.
