However, a mile or so from work, my radio cut out, the spoiler light blinked and my ABS and BAS ESP lights came on then went off. I turned off the radio and AC, put down the windows and proceeded to pray for the next 10 minutes while I was stuck in traffic. Mechanically, everything seemed to run fine and the car did not sputter or die. However, the windows wouldn't go up and the ABS/BAS lights kept coming on and my spoiler is now up. I know the spoiler is a classic sign of a bad battery, but my question is this:

Are the "accessories", i.e. windows, radio, spoiler powered by the battery or the alternator while the car is running? Specifically, I'm wondering if maybe my battery was indeed bad and not charging correctly. OR is the alternator dead and thus not able to charge the batter?

Basically, I'm going to run to the auto parts store on my lunch today but I don't know if I should just buy a new battery, or if I should jump my car (assuming it won't start, though I haven't tried), try to drive it there and see if they can recharge the battery and test the alternator. Long story short, I don't want to buy a new battery if I don't have to, but if its just the battery that is the issue I would love to just get a new one and be done with it!

Need some advice. As previously mentioned, I'd rather not spend money on the wrong thing.
Just gettig in on this thread. My van (not my Xfire) has had recent issues with starting after using the radio or bluetooth while off but in the ACC key status. The battery tested good, and so did the charging system. Happened twice before I went ahead and just changed the battery. Issue resolve. It was reading fine while on and low after using accessories in the off position. Then fine after charging. The reserve power just wasn't there like it should be. Likely a bad cell. If your battery is more that 3 years old - just change it. If it's the alternator you'll notice issues while driving but they may be issues while driving caused by a bad cell as well due to fluctuations in conductivity. I'm not saying it's only the battery, but it would seem to be the likely culprit. Also, if you buy it and the place you purchase if from gives the A / OK to your charging system, you could take it back for a refund. Good luck.

Did you do this?????

well finally got the final word. The car finally died on my yesterday, took the battery out and got it fully charged then checked all the voltage. 12.xx while running which indicated the alternator, as pretty much everyone has already mentioned. I was so stuck on trying to figure out how the 3 days on jack stands would have caused this problem I really thought it would be all battery related. Turns out it was just a series of unfortunate events that my alternator decided to go bad right after the flat tire fiasco.

Long story short, $60 alternator from a salvage yard and a half hour of work later the battery light is off and everything looks like its in good running order.. knock on wood

GREAT !!!
Thanks for reporting back.
You were lucky, seems about 50% of the time someone gets an alternator to replace, they find they have the wrong one after they remove the one from the car.
