Default P0410 secondary air injection

This morning the check engine light came on, so i took my 05 crossfire limited to advance auto so the could tell me what the problem was. The computer pull up code (P0410 secondary air injection). i call the dealership and they said its probably the air pump or a relay... i looked up the price of the air pump, and its way to expensive for me right now. can anyone tell me is it something that has to be replace asap? and i go a few months without it?

All that pump does is inject air in the exhaust to heat the cats faster. No big deal, but you wo'nt pass an emissions test.

Usually, the problem is broken solder joints or a bad relay on the Relay Control Module. I'd pull the module and get any odd-looking joints re soldered at a radio shop.
There is a "How to" here on it - search "RCB" or "how to relay control board resolder".

If that does not do it, go from there: the relay itself, connections to the air pump or air pump itself.

Thanks, ill check it out. recently its been cold, and when i start the car it starts whining, but then shuts off when the car warms up. could that be the air pump? its wasn't cold this morning, so i didn't hear a whining sound. just the check engine light came on

The pump runs a bit when the car is warming up, again, to introduce more O2 in the exhaust so as to heat up the cats faster and keep emissions down.

So you SHOULD hear it. But it might not be running enough or fast enough to make the PTCM happy... In any event, it is no big deal if you have no emissions check coming up.

You can google that code and read about it yourself - it is also mentioned in the emissions section of the service manual.

I suppose you COULD have a sensor going bad that is lying to the PTCM about what it is seeing in the exhaust and the assumption is being made that the pump is not running... but every time someone talks about that code, it's the relay, contacts on the board or the pump is bad - or so it seems.

OK, thanks. I Googled my issue and got a lot of info, but did get the info you are giving me. as far as the emissions test, the state of South Carolina doesn't require one. but thanks, ill take a look at the relay and solder joints and move from there. its probably best i run it to an auto shop so they can properly diagnos the issue... Thanks again

I have been working at finding the issue with mine for a while. It's not the RCM, I checked with 2 different repaired boards. It's not the pump, diagnosed through DAS. I think mine is Vaccum related. One of my gold diaphram things is dented. I'm putting money it's on that, but a friend of mine had slightly loose vaccum lines to the diaphrams and it through the code as well.

BTW if you end up needing an air pump, let me know. I can pull the one from the V6 which was perfect when I had that motor in.

If it does not need one then you can add a plate and just forget about the problem. Look it up here on how to do it.
Saves the money on fixing it.

If you download the 2005 Factory Service manual the P0410 section begins on page 9-426 (page 2350 in the .pdf)

thanks sk8erjosh09, if i need a air pump ill let you know. i guess while im at it ill check my vacuum lines too. this is starting to turn into a complicated issue. my engine check light went off yesterday afternoon, and it hasnt came back on since them. it was 19 degrees this morning and the car cranked up fine. im thinking it may be smart to put more money aside for this car.
