Key will not turn when inserted in ignition
Went to start car about 10 am this morning to get warm, it was around 10 degrees here in the 'sunny south'. The key inserted fine, but would not turn inside ignition. I tried moving steering wheel to see if it was locked up (for lack of better description), no help. A bit of recent history, the key fob electric buttons for locking/unlocking stopped working a week ago, got batteries replaced, still didn't work, checked on forum, needed to reset which worked fine. Been driving it past week with no problems. On a venture out in 2nd vehicle, I had the opportunity to stop at Sears auto, the repair people hadn't heard of this problem, nor did the stealership (love it!) when I rang them, at least not in a Crossfire. Also stopped at a NAPA store,
nothing. Anyone experienced this one before?!

Click on "search" above and enter "Sticky Key". There is a procedure to fix this, it takes about an hour and 1/2. You can print out the instructions and fix it yourself or have a local 'car guy' or shop fix it for you. No parts needed, there is a modification that we do to it - total cost is about 1 1/2 hours labor.
OR, you can take it to a dealer and they will replace the entire assembly for about $700.

The mods should change this in the first post as it is wrong, I did tell someone who shall remain nameless but not hinted at - starts with a V.

The rekcah Sticky Iggy Fix is at version #4 and the version you have in the first post in that thread is version #2.
That first post is a mess. You should rewrite it and just have the correct version at the top in large letters. The other reference to it in the post goes in circles and should be deleted.

Dave, without comparing line by line of the two versions, what is the difference? Just curious. I used the early version and don't recall any real problems. James
I get mentioned in one of the changes.
That change is just not to take out two screws that are a b!tch to get back and do not need to come out anyway
Thanks for this information, I took a look at both versions 2 and 4 and I am now going to admit, I am a female, so you can imagine what the steps involved look like to me!
Don't think I want to tackle this job. I'm thinking first alternative is to interview a locksmith to see if he could do the fix, secondarily tow to a garage, also interview them to see if they have expertise in this matter, if not keep looking. I live 20 miles from the nearest small town and have used a a small repair garage for oil changes, tires, if they aren't able there is another alternative that looks a bit more modern and they've worked on my truck. I appreciate any more advise.
Looks like I just got one more job on my 'to-do' list for this weekend. the car did this the other night, i was able to remove key, re-insert and it worked but I do not want my wife to have to encounter this. She was next to me at the time and asked "what's that? how did you fix it?" my reply, as always "magic fingers!"

This member opened up the switch and found the pocket empty with no previous marks on the cover which has to be mutilated to get off. He was doing a proactive fix on the part.
I'm thinking the wife's roadster has already been done.. missing the little "door" the key pushes through.. and smooth as silk on operation. Nothing like they way mine works.. LOL.
That's interesting. Any time my key has done this, I just tilted the wheel (past the wheel lock) and could hear the bolt retract, key turns. -Are these two separate issues?
I have an '04 and will be looking at it this weekend or sooner if time permits and will report back findings, as I'd rather address it now than in a parking lot somewhere! Hopefully I won't have to take anything out as the fix suggests, I assume if I don't have the "door" that we smash to remove pin/spring my unit is gtg. I know this isn't definitive of model year/ production changes but it may help us narrow it down.

He's talking about that little trap door (dust protector?) where you insert your key.. Noticed the roadster didn't have it.. and with it working smoothly.. think I can safely presume it has been done by a PO.
My car does not have the door/dust cover. Maybe it is jammed by dust. LOL
They lock cylinder is separate from the main ignition body and I cannot recall if and how the dust cover would be affected by the sticky iggy fix, Though I suspect I had one once on one car or the other.
Maybe it's an 04 thing.. figure it didn't just fall off.. or somebody just decided they didn't like it.. musta been in there for some reason or another and sticky key is the only logical conclusion..
