I was having battery issues last month and finally replaced the battery. Turned on a little rough and idled fine for a few minutes as i was cleaning up tools. Then it shut off and would not turn back on after trying a few times. Then tried to read codes and none were found. Checked RCM and all solder looked great but did three trouble areas just in case. Still not wanting to start up. Where do I go from here? Does crankshaft position sensor give trouble codes when bad?

Does mean :
1. the engine turns over but does not start
2. nothing happens when I turn the key

If #1, then yes, could be the CPS, get a Bosch and replace it. ( could also be fuel related )
If #2, still could be the RCM, except in this case relay contact or relay coil issues. ( send RCM to tighed1 )

 

I am going to order a cps on Amazon they seem to have the best price on a Bosch one. Thanks. Also, started looking on here for other issues I started having. After a few lock unlock cycles the locks quit working. Pulled the drain plug out of the bottom of truck and drained about a gallon out of water from pump side other side is perfectly dry. We have had lots of rain on east Texas.

 

That didn't answer my question, but yes by all means keep the pump dry.

 

Lots of rain or a little rain, when it leaks it leaks. Fix the leak before getting a new pump. They cost $300 or so used and $600or so new.

Sorry #1. Starter turns engine over like normal but does not start.
Also, lots of rain and water. Pulled foam out and pulled plug to drain at least a gallon. Working on drying up inside of pump. Lower inch was in water. Three pins on on the lower connector are gone. I will try and resolder new pins and other corroded components. Prices to replace are 250-600. Now to try and find the leak. Could this be causing the starting issue?

Have seen more and more fuel pump relay coils going bad.
Can you hear the fuel pump energize for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to the on position?
If not could be the fuel relay.
To test if the fuel relay is bad, Open the RCM and close the contact on the fuel relay (#4, see picture). If car starts and runs, Ta-da! You found the problem.
I can fix that for ya. :-)

Another way to check w/o opening the RCM------
Shoot Carb cleaner (something flammable) into throttle body and see if car runs as long as you are spraying. If it stops when you stop spraying. Good chance it's the fuel relay.

 

So I was turning the car over to check if I could hear anything with the relay and it started right up and ran. Left it idle again and it died after a minute or so. I can hear a loud click of a relay in the RCM when I turn it to run and a pump sound under the hood close to the transmission area. When I press on the fuel rail test port it always shoots a little fuel out. I'm still thinking crankshaft sensor. I read it can fail as engine warms up. How are you holding the relay closed? Alligator clip?

Human finger. Assistant starts car.

Something like a match stick or the like will work.

 

After ordering crankshaft sensor and installing with no luck I had a friend come over to crank the car while I held down the relay. Worked and started up great. Pulled RCM and used 12v power supply to test relay coils directly all worked except fuel pump. Should have done those to begin with. O well.

$25 gets the RCM tested, both fuel pump and air pump relays replaced, Me So Horny mod applied.
I then test it in my car then return to you via USPS Priority Mail. Usually repair the day I receive it and have it back in the mail the next morning.

I gotta start charging more for this!

YES ! If you are replacing 2 relays, you should. That is not a trivial task, been there, done that and ain't going back again.

Most people just put the $25 cash in the padded envelope with the RCM.

( I know, because I did these repairs for people back when DJ went walkabout for a few months , but he's a whole bunch better at it than me !)
