Thanks Maggy55 - using this info a guy could unsolder the potentiometer and give it a good alcohol bath ...

For $3 it might be better to just replace it.

DONE! Simple (less than) 1 hour job from start to finish. I was surprised how fast the head went back into the dash. Usually, I have to jiggle those two shafts a couple (at least) times to get them to line up to their counterparts in the blend doors socket shafts. 100% functional, much smoother fan speed stepping now. Thanks Maggy55! Oh, two points, first, you'll have to line up the shaft to the circle on the PCB or the **** shaft will not align correctly through to the **** (just look through the hole in the new potentiometer and make sure it is lined up to the circle on the PCB, you'll have to 'bend' the pins to get it to line up right since the center tap pin is extended on the replacement). Second, you have to be sure you carefully match the fan **** shaft to the location where it is set to the off position of the ****. It is possible to get it 180 degrees out of whack. When you take it out of the old one, make sure it matches the setting on the old one and is not 180 degrees off. Super fast and easy repair!

It did in my 05 SRT. I could set my fan at the second speed and wiggle the selector between 2 and 3 and the fan speed would jump from like 1 to 5 all at the same setting. I put this in and my speeds naturally progress from 1 to 5 now.

what is the secret to get the board of the main assembly.
Is it to unsolder the three terminals at each end of the board and the unsnap the eight other clips?
I would like to take it apart and save the four adjustment *****, two just slide off but the temperature ***** are a mystery to me.

Yes you must unsolder the end temperature control ***** and ensure they are no longer connected to the board. Then very gently remove it from the temperature control ***** and eight retaining clips. On reassembly ensure the speed control **** now realigns. It is keyed but can cause problems on reassembly due to alignment with the new potentiometer, . I bent the three legs on the new potentiometer to ensure it was in the same exact spot as the old one to aid in alignment.
Hope this helps.

That is what I figured but how to take the temperature control ***** out is not so obvious, there is a Allen key hole on each hub but it just turns the hub.
