Default Muffler Removal

I'm installing a Borla cat back exhaust system. Having trouble removing the original muffler from the rubber hangers. Does anyone have any tips on how to get if off?

spray with penetrating oil, (ie. wd-40 or the like). they should then just slide off.

Thanks scot1981, I tried WD-40. Maybe I didn't use enough.

Get a cotter pin removal tool from sears or the like... its basically a screwdriver with a short right angle on the end... get it in there and pull the rubber hanger off the metal part of the muffler. Its hard, but can be done with some persistence and a few helpful tools.

I got them off of a different vehicle by using a large pair of channel locks. Put one jaw on the back side of the rubber mount right next to the rod and the other jaw on the end of the rod. With a little WD-40, you should be able to slide the mount down the rod.

I just did it by hand, took some elbow grease and a touch of blood, but I ended up winning.

Haha.

A friend was helping and he kept looking for different screwdrivers and such to try to get it off with no luck. It was one of those trying to help but getting in the way situations and I just got frustrated said move and got it by hand. I know I got a cut somewhere from it, I think I got my index knuckle, but after working on cars my whole life- a cut is all in a days work at this point. My hands and fingers have more scars on them than I can count.

I should add- figitt has the right idea- use any strong "hook" style tool- bent screwdriver, cotter pin removal tool, etc. and it will make your life much easier.

Finally got it off. The cotter pin extractor did the trick. The Borla system fit very nicely. I do notice better low end response. As far as the sound, It's a lower tone up to around 2500 rpm. At higher RPM it is actually softer than the original setup. I'm sure after a few miles it will "open up" a little.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Rob: Yes, above 2500 rpm the Borla is not as loud as the stock system. If it's more sound someone's looking for, Borla's not it. I drove about 25 miles today and I am more and more impressed with the increased performance however. I give it a "thumbs up" for performance. "Thumbs down" for sound.

For future reference: The center rubber mounted on the muffler should be removed first. This lets the muffler be pushed up a little and makes the outside rubbers come off easier. I like the sound of my new Borla setup. But yes it is quiet above 3,000 rpm.
