Default Engine Remains On After Key Is Removed

Evening everyone,

I am a new member of this forum and new owner of a 2004 Coupe with 101,000KM. I inherited this car from my father recently.

I feel like this may be part of the issue so I will give a little backstory. My father became unable to drive and the car sat for 1.5-2 years. I recently started it up for the first time, and other than a super dead battery, a check engine light(my father said this was normal and periodically comes on and off) and a toast tail light. I checked the oil, gave the tires some air and checked the other fluids- everything was within the minimum and looking healthy. Ive put about 1000KM on the car since then with no issues- until yesterday.

Upon returning home from a trip in the city I parked the car and to my astonishment the car did not turn off when the key was removed from ignition. My astonishment only lasted a second because when I hit the brake the car turned off. I went for another ride today and the same thing happened, with the key being removed and then turning off a few seconds later.

I am wondering what this could be? A few google searches have pointed me in the direction of the fuel pump relay module. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks a ton! What you guys have done with this forum over the years is amazing.

A clue to the cause of the problem is that the car turns off when you press on the brake pedal. It's very likely the cause is a faulty aftermarket remote start system.

EVERY TIME someone talks about adding a remote start or "push button start" to a Crossfire, I mutter, "SOMEONE is going to have a real 'Dr. Phil' moment...."

He’s a Canadian, what can you expect.
🙄 🇨🇦
I joke of course, like a good Canadian he did say thanks, we are polite generally and not prone to pick a fight.😉
Maybe he has not had time to see to his problem yet, we Canadian’s are busy little beavers.

I prefer that versus some new member that constantly posts and answers every thread thinking they suddenly are a Crossfire expert!

Afternoon guys!

Thanks for all the responses! Toolman, I went ahead and read that thread you linked.

I did go ahead and went to the vehicle to take a look to see if I could find anything related to aftermarket remote starters- no dice. It appears the ignition and key fob are OEM.

Some further testing revealed to me that the vehicle is able to turn off normally if you take your foot of the brake and put the shifter into neutral (this is a 6 speed).

Unfortunately, my dad was the most mechanically inclined in the family and he’s unable to answer the questions I have in the state he is in. My mechanical aptitude generally starts and ends at making sure fluid levels are OK and replacing burnt out lights etc.

I just want to thank all of you guys again for answering my post! Tomorrow I will be taking it into the family mechanic to make sure everything else is mechanically sound- the car did sit for almost 2 years! If they are able to shed any light onto the issue I will make sure I report back here and post about it.

Thanks again.

So there is no module in the underhood fuse box or the large box next to the battery? Keep in mind that all of the connections needed for a remote start can also be found under the hood - it is not 100% required that the remote start be installed near the ignition switch - altho that is where most put them.

You have a bridge between battery feed and switched ignition that is interrupted by pressing the brake pedal - sounds like a remote start or pushbutton start kit to me. Of course, ANY bridge between battery hot and switched ignition would explain this - but the fact that pressing the brakes shuts the car off certainly implies a remote- or pushbutton-start.

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I got real busy and left the car parked for about a year until another local crossfire forum member reached out to me and was able to come see the car. We were able to successfully get the car running, driving and turning off normally by replacing the RCM, battery and removing the brake light bulbs I had installed.

Obviously, we aren't sure exactly which thing fixed the car but maybe its worth noting I had installed the wrong brake bulbs. The ones we removed were single filament instead of the required the dual filaments.

Anyway. I appreciate all the responses to my original post - I am extremely happy driving this car everyday.

Oh! The mechanic, the forum member and I were all not able to find any evidence of a remote start/push start button ever being installed.

It was almost certainly the brake light bulbs. This has come up recently apart from your car.
