Hoping someone can assist - what is the thin tube that runs under the battery tray in my '05 base roadster? Prior owner had a battery leak, battery tray and adjacent fender lining rusting badly. Took it apart, sanded and primed, but in the process this tube (see photo) broke. I cannon figure out what it is - in order to replace it!
Thanks in advance for any assistance. Pre-breakage (also notice the rust) Broken tube as it appears to pass through the firewall At least it's not rusted anymore...
This is a profoundly undocumented item in our cars. It is an example of the "errors and omissions in our incomplete service manual" that I comment on often.
BUT...
YOu are calling it a "vacuum tube". THIS is a vacuum tube"::
What you have there is a vacuum line. IT runs from the Throttle body to the HVAC actuator assembly in the instrument panel, passenger side.
Referring to a plastic tubing as a "vacuum tube" Is very offensive to me. You are forgiven, but only this one time.
Thanks for the help and link - I guess topic was already covered.
For anyone following: I used a heat-shrink connector to secure the broken ends (after holding in place temporarily with thin layer of electrical tape). Used a heat gun - luckily no vulnerable parts in the area, though I did insulate the rest of the vacuum line and nearby plastics. After the repair, covered the vulnerable portion of the tubing (under battery in the event of a future leak) with braided electrical wire cover for good measure, (in photo, you can see my trickle charger)
Now time to put the battery back and take the dormant roadster out of hibernation for a spin before predicted snow this coming week.
I think most everyone's is broken by now. Age and heat is all it takes.
I was surprised that mine is broken. I have not fixed it yet. When I get bored, I will.
The remainder of the line looked ok - there was just a focal area where it was brittle (and broke) which is likely where the battery acid had dripped.
Good thing, since it looks like a heck of a job to replace the full length of tubing.

I'll be replacing my battery in a couple of days. Thanks to your post I'll check mine out and maybe put some convolute tubing over it.
