Oil filter pulled by Chrysler?
I work at an MB dealer parts counter. The largest MB parts dealer in the central US as a matter of fact ($20+ million in parts sales last year).
If your Chrysler dealer is still raping you with the filter, go to any MB dealer and pick up filter 000-180-26-09 (book list $18.50) and it'll be fine.
The AMG cars (as in SRT-6) use 10,000 mile oil drain intervals and the standard MB cars with the 112 engine (non-SRT XF) use 15,000 mile intervals.
Change it at 3,000 if you like, but it shouldn't be necessary. We see very few engine failures at our shop. When we do, it's usually because the owners drove the cars into high water and bent a rod or two. Mercedes don't make good wet vacs but we still booked over 100 flood cars due to the recent storms in our area.
Even when a flood car bends rods, the rest of the engine looks perfect. No blown out blocks or damaged heads.
These are well built motors. I wouldn't worry about the extended drain intervals recommended by DCX.

There have been three types of filters used on the Crossfire since it was introduced. The first couple of years the paper filters were used. It has been only in the past year or so they switched from paper to fleece and now the new one where the cap comes attached to the filter. Be careful what you ordered at that website. If you just type in "oil filter" in the search block, it comes back $9.25... their price is $7.40. I presume that is the old paper filter.
Now, if you do the search by P/N which is 5102905-AB, that is the old style fleece filter which they list at $18.50... their price is $14.80.
Unless the shipping was free, it sounds as like they sold you the old paper filter. I was going to order the fleece filter awhile back but with shipping it was still cheaper to buy it from the dealer for $18.50 plus tax.

Wow! $60 for a fleece oil filter. I think when they said fleece they may have meant:
a) swindle
b) con
c) rip off
d) cheat
e) take somebody for a ride

waiting for chrysler to give me a verdict on my vibration issue tomorrow, i went to MB to pickup the filter and also oil...
it cost 18 and change...the oil broke out to 8 per qt...
i got to speak with the parts manager their, SAM and he introduced me to 2 techs there. they told me MB switched oil filters as well because the "norm" in oil changing with BENZ doesn't mean an automatic filter change. so it is about longevity of the filter...
they also service/change the 0/40 synth every 10,000 miles in their customer's cars...

I went to a Mercedes dealer today and spoke to a Master Tech about the Mercedes SLK 320...which is the same engine and drive-train as our Crossfire. He told me that Mercedes changed from the paper oil filter to the fleece oil filter in 2001...because the synthetic Mobil 1 oil was breaking down the filter...and its been the fleece filter ever since. Parts department sells it for $20.00.
Also...he said recommended oil change service on the slk 320 is every 14,000 miles!

I work for a DC company and have access to MB parts and when I tried to order the MB number it changed to 51020905AB. I did not order it because I wasn't sure if it was the paper or fleece filter. Does anyone know? And I would question 14,000 miles.
Was at dealership yesterday, with unrelated problem. Service manager wanted to do oil change. I declined as there is still 8,300 km on the FSS. I asked about the oil filters and was advised they were still the paper element. I asked about any recall or replacement fleece element filters and he had no idea what i was talking about. My problem required the dealership to telephone DC Australia pacific. They had no idea about the fleece filters either. All they could come up with, was a temperature variation between the US and Aust must be the reason for the change in the US??? How can you respond to logic like that?

They told me it was MB's call not Chrysler's. MB's practice is to keep the oil filter in for 10,000 miles. Some MB owners change the oil before the 10,000 miles but the dealer keeps the same filter in!!

Fleece oil filter available from http://www.chryslerpartsdirect.com
I just bought two of them, only comes with the one top O ring though, so don't discard the other three rings when you change it. Can't find my invoice, but I think it was $12.95 +/- ea.

Ten oil and filter changes thus far (20k miles). But I'm running the car hard and after two track days the oil is BLACK. 8 qts. of 40W Redline Racing oil with 1 pint of MMO.
I put a quart of MMO in the engine 24 hours before changing the oil, that may be why the oil comes out so black. MMO is believed to remove the carbon deposits in the cylinder heads.
I just bought a filter and it was made of Italian leather...lol
The last filter I bought was the fleece style and it was $12.95 from a dealer (same one I bought my car from). I've been changing my oil every 7k and the condition of the oil is looking like it is still good.
