How to take apart a key fob without destroying it!
Re: How to take apart a key fob without destroying it!
Yes, take the battery cover off, take the battery out.
Shake any water out and then dry with a hair dryer. Don't melt anything, but blow it as dry as you can get.
Then store it in a ziplock bag of dry rice or silica gel for a few days.
Put new battery in it and try it out.
If that doesn't work, you're probably out of luck.

Awesome post. I accidentally ran one of my fobs over with the lawnmower last summer. The key survived and still opens the door but the internals were all destroyed. The key is also a little off so it won't spring out for me. Thanks for taking the time to do the write up.

I don't know if this applies to your fob after being run over. But my key suddenly started to only pop out a little when the release button was pressed. It just seemed to open very slowly. I noticed there is a tiny black "rolled pin" in the side of the key, right near where it swivels when it opens. That pin is used to hold the metal part of the key onto the fob. That tiny pin had slid out just slightly, so that it was not flush on both sides of the key. So when I would try to open the key, the pin would drag against the plastic. Used a screw driver to gently push the pin in again, so it was flush on both sides of the key, and it is not dragging anymore, it pops open like it always did before.

If anyone needs a replacement outer shell for a key fob, I happened to spot this on Walmart, through a third-party vendor. The shell and metal key is only $7.99 with free shipping on clearance. The seller didn't get great reviews, but it's a low cost item without a lot of risk. I don't know how close of a match it is to the factory original, but there might be a part of this that will fix something if someone has a broken shell. There's no electronics in it, and the color looks black and not gray, but if you need parts....

One of each! Thanks guys! Great price AND my spare key (with rotted out panic button) will be replaced. Never did find out why that spare panic (red) button rotted like it did BUT soon to be OK. I can also ditch my 3' long white zip tie, it can be recycled (used this as a trans level tool, tip was found in this outstanding forum of XF lovers). Both for under 16 bucks and free shipping!

Ebay fobs are no good. They do not have a place for the lens. I wasted my time trying three of them. I tried to modify one also and no luck ,so spend the 60 if that's right and buy one from Chrysler or hopefully have a friend that works for them and get a discount!!
