You are correct I would not do it either. I also installed a new RCM but it cost me $186 at Pelican Parts. The RCM would not be as likely to be ok sitting in a junk yard potentially exposed to the weather. I was talking about the secondary air pump itself as an example of the concept.

Chased P0410 leisurely the last few years. Changed the little valve A 002 140 84 60, but the code kept returning. Did the full troubleshooting by the manual and this forum, found nothing wrong. I concluded the most likely part to cause the issue is the relay. Bought the M-B A 170 545 03 05 relay module and put it in last summer. No more P0410 faults. Some here say they have found the faults within these modules. I cannot find any bad solder or cracked foils in the one I removed. But I can say with confidence the replacement relay module fixed it.

Take the spring off of the air pump relay (relay on edge of the board).
Flip the braided wire over the top of the relay and pull the armature out.
Bet the relay contacts are burnt up. That's where the PO410 comes from 99% of the time.

Relay can be replaced for way less then buying a new unit.

Default De-soldering Tips

Well, I finally got around to removing the relay for the secondary air injection pump. It’s a bit of PITA, even for someone who is familiar with soldering, but not de-soldering.

For anyone not practiced in de-soldering, you should check out this helpful YouTube video:

Tips:
  • Use a decent quality soldering station with small tip. (I have a decades old Weller W-TCP.)
  • A de-soldering pump works better than a bulb sucker.
  • Main takeaway from the YouTube video: Adding new solder is a critical step in de-soldering!
It took me to three steps to remove the relay: initial solder removal (which did not result in being able to get the relay off the board), cutting the relay apart using a Dremel, and then more de-soldering to remove the remaining pieces of pins stuck on the board.

This is the good news part of the story; my next post has the bad news.

Default Replacement Relay Woes!

I bought two Picker PC 822-1A-12-A-X relays and this relay’s pin layout does not match the holes on the PC board!

Specifically, the two pins on the front of the relay are 8 mm apart and the board holes are 10 mm apart! See photo.

Since I bought two relays I tried bending the pin on one of them. Not surprisingly, it’s not working out.

Have others encountered this problem? If so, how did you solve it?

OR can someone please id the manufacturer and part number of a relay whose pin layout matches the board?

Thank you!

Thanks, now I remember what happened. The only supplier I could find required a minimum order of 10 relays for the American Zettler. So, I bought the Picker based on an Amazon search and of course, it is the wrong one!

Would like to, but even in this time of pandemic I need the car to operate and cannot really have the car inoperative for a week.

I have a refurbished "Swapper" RCM. I'll send it to you with a prepaid return box that you send your bad one back to me in.
Little extra charge cuz of postage but no down time! If interested email me. tighed1@hotmail.com

Or you can get the correct relay on Ebay. Search for "AZ970E-1A-12D
"

Duh, I should have checked eBay!

Thanks, I just ordered a relay from you. (Gotta be you!) Once installed I'll see if the P0410 code is banished.

Yes, that is it. The burned contact is hard to see without pulling the movable contact out as you say.

Burned contact....

Pizzaguy purchased a batch and sold of the ones he did not want to people here, they would go pretty fast I am sure.

Received the relay with Friday's mail and soldered it onto board that afternoon. (Soldering is so much easier than de-soldering!) Thanks again tighed1.

Have driven ~120 miles since installing it and no CEL yet! On Saturday I did a highway run up to SF of 90 miles round trip. Not sure how many miles need to be driven before declaring success.

One concern: while sitting at a stop light on 19th Ave in SF I did hear some motor(?) cycle on and off a few times.

That would be the air injection pump from what I read, I cannot say I have heard it but I am a bit deaf.
I think you have solved your problem.

Well, today the CEL came back and I heard the pump intermittently run for a short time, 5 seconds or so each time. Ugh.

tighed1, I will send you an email about the "Swapper." Thx
