Question Something loose behind steering wheel

I can hear something loose in my steering wheel when turning. Almost sounds like a wire loose, rubbing against the hub. I wish to remove the airbag to take a peek.

The service manual and every post I've found regarding the matter says to remove the two screws behind the steering wheel. Problem is, NO one seems to indicate what kind of screws those are. Conveniently, Chrysler (Mercedes) hides the screws from view, so not even a mirror and flashlight worked.

I've tried torx 10, 15 and 20 screwdrivers with no luck. My 25 and 35 torx drivers are too long...

I've tried a socket set with torx bits, but the magnetic bit holder is too wide for the hole.

Has anyone actually succeeded in pulling this thing off? If so, what tool did you use???

Thanks!

The title of this thread leaves you W-I-D-E open for abuse...
Seriously, do a search on the forum. There was/is a problem with something coming loose on the steering column if my memory serves me right. Sorry I'm not much help but there's all the information you need on here somewhere.

LOL!! That's true about the title, but I enjoy a good ribbing from time to time.

I haven't come across a post that describes the issue I'm having yet. I've seen several about loose steering columns that light the ESP and such. But this seems to be within the steering column. And only the noise of something loose rubbing against the housing is evident. The performance of the car's systems all still seem to be fine - excluding the idiot behind the steering wheel, of course!

I'll keep looking.

Thanks!

My car has started doing this lately too. When i used to work at Mercedes we often had to replace something called the "clock spring". Im guessing that might be the culprit. Be sure to post back and let us know what you found.

Playing around with the air bag can get dangerous, disconnect the battery at least before starting to fiddle around with it or they may find you in the trunk.
