Default Alternative Methods to Acquired Power Control Module?

Hello all,

I recently purchase a 2005 manual convertible base model. It was driving fine and then the Power Control Module (PCM) decides to crap the bed. Here are some diagnose tests I performed on the car:
  1. Both Snap On Verus Pro and Matco Maximus 2.0 point toward the PCM.
  2. Check and bypass test clutch switches.
  3. After extensive research, I re-solder the RCM, and perform load test. The results were fine.
  4. The car cranks twice, sometimes start for a brief second then die. After removing battery cables, I can try again for two-three more times.
  5. When I bypass the pulse module, the car will crank but won't start.
  6. I took the dash out and trace power source to plug 18, which power the PCM. There is power to plug 18.
Long story short, with the help of two scanner, two other techs, I highly suspect that the PCM needs replacing. Which leads to my question: Are there any alternative ways to obtain a PCM for the xfire? (I know there are people that can program the PCM, not just the dealers. They claim the reason is for 'theft' prevention purposes) The dealers want me to tow the car to them so they can program the PCM. The closest dealer is nearly 30 miles.

Any input is strongly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Not sure where PCM came into the picture, but the symptoms you are describing point to a SKREEM module issue.

Hi ala_xfire,

Thank you for your response. Most importantly, I truly appreciate the vast resources from this wonderful forum. You are correct, it is the SKREEM from the service manual, which I followed to remove the module. However, when pull up the part #170-820-18-26 printed on the module (it has a Siemen part # as well) it listed as Power Control Module, and the scanners listed it as such as well. That's why I went with that.

On another note, I feel like this thread belongs somewhere else, and I have no clue how to move it to Troubleshooting/Diagnose forum...

O, OK. I was confusing PCM as mentioned with the PTCM module located by the battery.

Please disregard my last about scanner code. The code is P2071 Security Key.... not sending signal. Which is the SKREEM. However, the part # on the SKREEM when pull up is listed as Power Control Module. So confusing....

Thank you for you response, James. That is great. I will get in touch with Rob as soon as I can determine whether I need the SKREEM or the PCM... My gut tells me it's the SKREEM but the part # said otherwise.
