Rpm
danimal is right 6,200 rpm is where the rev limiter kicks in... if yours is cutting at 4k you need to have the ECU reflashed at the dealer... either that or check the calibration on your gauge...

We need him to clarify this... If it's un-loaded or under driving conditions... Trust me, 6,200 is the cut out...

TO HDDP: That's the only thing I could figure he was talking about. I'm like you, I wouldn't think of dumping the clutch on my XF at that RPM, but I wouldn't be surprised at how many on this site probably do.
Heck, if my car shut down every time I hit 4k, I'd never get up my driveway. (but then I have a long, steep driveway) LOL. I guess we won't know for sure until he logs back on.

The question is, why the hell would you want to sit in neutral and over-rev the engine?
Nope... Not a drag guy... I'm a sports car guy... SCCA & IMSA road racing... I plead my ignorance when it comes to seeing how fast you can drive in a straight line for a 1/4 mile... And I'm not all that interested in Oval Track racing either, even though I've done it... Now give me a good 3.5 mile road course and you'll see a big smile on my face... Chicanes into sweepers into a straightaway into a hairpin and back again... Now that's what I call FUN.
I was just trying to answer your question as to why anybody would over rev their engine while in neutral. The only place I ever see people doing it, is at the drags for a high RPM launch. Since TACHo never gave us an answer to our question, all we can do is guess as to what he was really talking about in the first place.
I've always enjoyed drag racing, but I'd love to try SCCA racing too. Maybe someday with my Miata.

Well I used to drag, not in this car, but I have taken it to the track once. I will say if you are revving to 4k you are really good with the clutch and you will be going through them fast. Or you have a nice set of slicks on there. I'm also hoping to get my first road course under my belt at the SRT Nats. I'm know at heart, I'm more of a road course guy, it just not as assessable around here or as cheap.
