Can someone link a good supplier in the US. Is there a better made third party version or just go with OEM?
Did you see my post above? They're the Mercedes OEM Stabilus brand.
Only one is required.

Sorry, I saw the post just wasn't sure if it was the most current part available.

Also forgive my stupidity here but isn't there one on each side of the car?

[QUOTE=jimmirehman;820611]I have a lot of play in my steering wheel

Test this for play:

Steering wheel straight
Engine off
Check for play. Should be very little to none.

Then check for play with steering wheel rotated 90+ degrees. Should be obvious play.

Nope. Just one right in the middle, in front of the tranny. You can't miss it. It helps stabilize the side shimmy of both front wheels. Here's some better pics over on the SLK forum. Exact same setup as ours.

Steering damper replacement/change (R170) - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

And in case it hasn't been mentioned, here's the torque values from the manual ....

Steering Damper Bracket Nut and Bolt 40 N.m / 29 Ft.Lbs / 348 In.Lbs
Steering Damper to Drag Link Nut and Bolt 40 N.m / 29 Ft.Lbs / 348 In.Lbs

on the shade tree scale that equates to "bout medium tight with a 3/8" socket wrench"
( Is a newton/meter a measure of how much force is required to throw Isaac Newton one meter ? )

I only threw that up there because the SLK dweebs were having a heated argument on what affect locktite has on those torque values. Heavens to Murgatroyd!

After replacing the steering stabilizer withe the recommended OEM unit from autohaus, I was very impressed with the improvement. However, the next day (75miles later) the improvement lessened but is still much better than the original witch was not leaking and had 56 k, and tried to kill me frequently. Any way to adjust the stiffness?

I just bought a Bilstein steering damper.
How can I check this new damper?

I can move it by hand (with force), is that normal?

Yes you can move it by hand, that is normal. I replaced my old one with a bilstein as well. The prior one was a stabilus that died when some linkage in my steering wheel went bad and kept causing the car to pull to the left.

Had a new Stabilus brand stabilizer installed a few days ago.
It was well worth doing, no more wonders and wiggles, the car is more relaxing to drive now.
The improvement was so great i actually thought the mechanic had maybe tightened the lock nut up as well , but he said he didnt touch it.

I replaced the stabilizer on our roadster at 60,000 miles and there was a marked difference.

Mine is defective, warned out. It's been 18,000 miles on since me last change. Someone please guide me to the best of the best part, please. Total miles 56k on 2004.
