Replace your Steering Stabilizer, you'll be surprised.

BTW, when I bought the car it had the stock Conti's on it and wanted to pull the wheel out of my hand as it wanted to follow the groves in the road. I just thought the tires where junk and replaced them. after getting rid of the Conti's I never had the provlem again but now my steering feels tight and like a brand new car.
Let you know!
Found an eBay store that's selling these for $19.95 + $7.70 shipping to me in SC (I think it's the same supplier discussed earlier in this thread). Thinking about getting one & putting it up until I need it.
The 1995 YJ Jeep Wrangler I've got has this same steering dampner in the front suspension. Doing any serious off-roading typically requires changing it every 12-18 months.

I put mine on from JT Outfitters about 200 miles ago. My original must have still been good because I can't seem to feel any difference. It seems my tires made the biggest difference last fall when I replaced them.

And don't forget the steering dampner which is an easy fix and almost a necessity.

so this amazon page leads me to believe the sachs and stabilus are the same:

and the search for the autozone part number gives results that fit tons of mercedes models:

Hey something to improve the crossfire for under$35! My 04 only has 18K on it, could it be shot so soon!? To me it seems to handle ok but for 30 bucks and simple to install it would be worth a shot. Is it a better than stock replacement part? When you guys mention tight steering do you mean the responsiveness etc?

When I refer to "tight" steering I am describing thelack of "play"and therelative effect on steering by the amount of input from me.
Atleastthat'sme.
Thanks to this forum, I not only purchased this part to solve my slop, I also experienced the dreaded "mystery no-start issue", and purchased the relay board for that. Both parts should be here any day now and I can't wait to get them in. Now it's off to the tire and brake section of the forum to find out what everyone likes in respect to that. LOL...I feel like I'm cheating!!!!!
I too ordered this damper (among other things) a few days ago (Sachs) based on the comments in this thread. Will need to start hiding the credit card bill from the wife...
I hear ya' about hidin' the credit card evidence...holy cow...I went on a spree last nite in the neighborhood of 1k....and that only took about ten minutes!
Well i finally got around to replacing my Steering damper i bought one from Mercedes for a 2004 SLK.
What a differance the car dosent get dragged all over the road when im driving.
one less project to do.

Wow! I just ordered it on Amazon.com on Monday night, and I found the box waiting for me when I got back 30mins ago! It was listed as a Sachs, but markings on it show "Stabilus". Had tax in WA, so it was $31.11 shipped free.
Weekend project coming up. Need to build me some simple ramps first...

Man, this site has an answer for everything! Been wondering about the rut-wandering ever since I bought my roadster a few months ago. Figured it was the tires, as the idiot dealer put new Kumho summers on the back and left the all-season old Contis in front. The damper makes perfect sense, though.
Just ordered from Amazon. Will report back after install, though I'll probably wait a bit and get this done with an oil change and putting new tires on the front.

Suggestion:
Put the stabilizer on BEFORE you change tires or AFTER you change tires. Changing one thing at a time will tell you more about the problem than shooting a shotgun at it.

Well my car has only 19K and mine was leaking. THe dealer replaced it under warranty as I had mentioned to him that my car was wandering all over the road when there were worn spots from a well traveled road. THe kicker was that it was a $615 part! I am very happy that I did not have to pay for that.
Yes she drives beautifully now and yes I am glad I have a warranty on this 07!

I love this site. But I could really do without some of the editorializing at times, especially when the snarky posters never seem to bother actually reading posts they make the dumbass comments about.
I failed to update on my experience.
I changed my tires first, and then the stabilizer a few weeks later. Tire change had more perceived impact of course.
The old stabilizer wasn't in too poor a condition, and I am keeping as an emergency spare. However the new stabilizer made a distinct difference when going over some familiar bumps along my daily commute. The steering wheel does not wander over them like they used to.
Having been my first actual mechanical DIY, I still keep looking at my rearview each time I hit a bump, expecting to see my stabilizer left on the road
You can see that I have much self-confidence in my own handiwork... I have long ways to go before approaching the level of the mechanical wizards on this forum
