It's been cold here and although I have a heated garage I haven't yet put the car on the ramps and installed it.

My Crossfire doesn't go out in the winter unless the roads are dry and the conditions are clear either
but as soon as I do the install and hit the roads I will post my results here on this thread.

What is all this talk about the stabilizer? Do these go bad quick or are these aftermarket ones?

My ride only has 15k but there is a bit of understeer or light steer. Given that the turning radius on these cars is so short I just thought that it came with the territory but if the road has any indentation or groove it pulls the car quite easily.

Will an upgrade like this address this?

Yes and yes.....although I have yet to install mine it is said to improve the truckers rut problem. I purchases from http://www.joetlc.com/steering-dampn...oo9uga2gg9bqp7

Replaced mine this weekend. Quick and easy. My old one was SHOT, 27K miles and the oil had leak out, the motion was jerky, and I am sure not helping my steering. Seems much better now, I won't know how much until I get my new tires, and get rid of my vibration. But so far, a definite need to do for most I am sure.

Took the Crossfire out today.
16 degrees outside / sunny and dry roads.
Came back home pulled into the heated garage and put it up on the ramps.
Changed the steering stabilizer in about 20 minutes.
Just a 5/8" socket and 5/8" wrench and two bolts.
The old one appeared to be OK but for $30 glad to have a new one.
I got 39000 miles on mine now.

Hmmm. Maybe that's the problem with my 06 with 11K on it. My first thought was an alignment issue, wanders is the best way to describe it to the left, and sometimes will even pull sharp one way or t'other, but this may be the issue rather than the align. I think I'll order one of these too and when it starts warming up here will put it in. Mark

Very interesting thread.
I went to JoelTLC and found:
MERCEDES BENZ SLK32 AMG 2004 V6 3.2 FI Steering Damper MERCEDES BENZ SLK32 AMG 2003 V6 3.2 FI Steering Damper MERCEDES BENZ SLK32 AMG 2002 V6 3.2 FI Steering Damper
I see where people have replaced the part, but I really can't narrow down the part numbers various people have put on their car. Which one is correct?

Oops, it appears to be JoelTLC Part # 1244630432

So Gary, what are your impressions of the new stabilizer (if any)?

I replaced mine and it took like 10 minutes. My car no longer feels "darty" when hiting ruts in the road. Well worn roads used to make the car zig zag a little. Especially while braking. It was never bad, but now it's gone.

I only drove a few miles after my install and on smooth roads so have not been able to see if has improved the wander/pulling on rutted roads yet.
Snowing lightly again today so it's in the garage for now.
Based on what others here have said I hope to have improvement with that wandering feeling though.

Agreed!

Installed mine today, went for a short drive, steering seemed a bit tighter which was nice. Hopefully it'll get more respect from pot holes as well.

When I got my roadster with 17,000 miles, the steering was as tight as a drum. Now at 24,000 miles, it felt like it had about .5 inch play at the wheel and was wandering - very annoying! It required constant correction to maintain a straight line, especially on windy days (pretty common occurrence here in Oklahoma).

I just changed my dampner (20 minutes total)...when I pulled out the old one, it felt about the same as the new one, so I was worried that it wouldn't make any difference -- how wrong I was! The steering is back to the original feel - no play, no wander! It goes exactly where I want it to and stays there.

It really renewed my enjoyment in driving my car - very hard to do since I love driving it so much! Unbelievable return on a $30 investment.

What would be the best way to explain this to the dealer to have it replaced under warranty?

My thoughts exactly since my warranty expires this coming July. You would have thought that a recall was in order to replace with a better unit to last longer.

Anyone have the torque specs for this steering stabilzer? Also, is this $20 replacement part in need of replacement in a couple of years just like the original? Time will tell I guess. Still not a bad deal of just spending under $30 once a year.
