Re: tire sizes to fit your car
Hello, I have a question for you guys. I'm sort of new to this forum and I've done a bit of searching and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.
I have 2 stock rims on my 04 coupe that are cracked and 1 of them is leaking air pretty badly (have to use portable compressor to air it up sometimes twice or three times a day). Instead of just replacing the stock wheels I've decided to instead upgrade to some aftermarket wheels. I went with the black Mandrus Millenniums 18 x 8.5 (32mm offset) in the front and 19 x 9.5 (25mm offset) in the rear. Still awaiting shipment.
My question is will the tires on my stock wheels fit these new aftermarket wheels? Or will i have to buy a whole new set of tires for the new wheels.. note that the front tires have less than 1,000 miles on them and the rears have around 5,000. (front tire size = 225 40/ZR18... rear tire size = 255 35R19)
Sorry if my question has been answered elsewhere and I just didn't see it. I appreciate any help you guys can give.
p.s. I also read somewhere on the forums that with these wheels I would need Lug bolts approximately 1/2 inch shorter than stock, so I ordered some 12x1.5 bolts with 27mm shanks (thread length). Can anyone confirm if these will be a good fit or if they're too short or too long? I am not too knowledgeable on this subject.
Thanks,
Ryan

Welcome to forum.
A 225 on a 8.5 and a 255 on a 9.5 is the max recommended rim width for those tires.
Being on the wider side of the recommended range will make a stiffer ride, on the narrower side will make the tires roll more on cornering.
Your next set of tires you might look at 235/275 that fit with no problem.
As for the lugs it depends on the thickness of the new wheels compared to stock wheels. On rear if lugs are to long they will hit the parking brake shoes.
Was the previous owner jumping curbs daily?
Got any pics?

Re: tire sizes to fit your car
All mercedes and crossfire lugs are "BALL" type.
most aftermarket are acorn "TAPERED" type,
that is where the lug meets the wheel,,,,,, tapered wheel (only use tapered lug) (same for ball type.)
with the wheel off the car stick the lug through one og the holes,, you should have about 5/8" sticking for the rear ,,,,the front does not matter as long as you don't have more than an inch or so,,, jim

Edit: the crack did not leak until after I had a nail hole patched last week. I'm thinking the shop that patched the tire may have worsened the crack with the machine that removes the tire from the rim.

Re: tire sizes to fit your car
Dumb question: not sure so, asking for input. Would a 255/40-19 (on stock N/A wheel) pose any fitment issue over the stock 255/35-19 rear tire size? I believe the same width but 1" taller overall (1/2 " each side of center). I'm sure speedo would be off a bit, not too concerned about that. Appears to be ample wheel well clearance. Tires would have some less rotations per mile= a bit slower wear. A taller sidewall may be a softer ride. Anything else? Seems most discussion is about wider, not taller sizes.
275/35 r 19 I run is .6" taller than the 255/35r 19.
Alot of ppl use the 275/35r19.
Biggest problem is when tire is installed on car with no load on suspension it slightly rubs the front, but when the suspension gets loaded it fits fine.
A are you looking for ride quality more than performance?
If so pay close attention to what tire sidewall you run, and a wider tire on a narrower rim will give more on sidewalls, but in cornering the tire will roll more.
The Gmax tires that alot of use run on back have a softer sidewall, and great traction especially wet.

Thank you. I've noticed the 275/35R19 is common here. Ride quality with decent mileage, at least average in the wet & cost are high on list. We don't push the handling too far. A 40 aspect ratio may be a slight improvement & I don't think we want increased width. Overall diameter & rotation changes were mostly from specs on TireRack. Not in any rush; was looking at General (Gmax?), Yokohama Advan Sport A/S, & Cooper Zeon (RS3?). Looking at Tire Review thread also. Thanks again.
I have had a couple pairs of high dollar tires on mine but car was a handful in the rain.
Front
Esr sr08 18x8.5 30 offset machine silver.
235/40R-18 YOKOHAMA AVID ENVIGOR
Rear
Esr sr08 19x10.5 20 offset, machine silver.
285/35ZR-19 CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DWS
Not lowered, but no rubs, front I had to take out 1 screw on each side on top of fender.
I have some pics of clearance on my 19x10 or 19x10.5 thread, pic is with tire shoved about as high as it will go, had alot of space under other tire, whole weight of car on front left and rear right tires, other two tires where off of the ground.
What is your offset on rear ?
Re: tire sizes to fit your car
Dumb noob question, but I've searched the forum and can't find an answer on whether these will fit or not. Local Craigslist ad has a set of Mercedes CLS 550 rims for sale. Online search makes me think these are 8.5Jx18 with 34.5 offset
Tires are 245/40/18 front and 375/35/18 rear. They're Goodrich super sticky summer tires
Wondering if these will fit. I'd like them for autocross.

If they do, pay the man, then come back and get your OEM's cause you ain't gonna get all 4 in the XF.

Re: tire sizes to fit your car
I doubt it. First with Merc wheels the offsets are all over the place and there are two different lug bolts, 12x1.5 and 14x1.5 (Crossfire uses 12x1.5s), C-Class Merc are usually 14s.
Second the clearance issue in the rear is tightest when the body is lifted and the wheel/tire drops. The trailing are angle moves the tire closer to the front wheel well.
Bottom line in the rear a 26" diameter tire will fit, a 27" may fit. I can't find a 375 but a 345 is marginal. Any chance that is really 275x35x18 rear ?
Those are pretty wheel particularly with the nice merc centers.
