Default Paint or Powder Coat

Purchased my car with some curb rash. Estimates to repair and repaint $400.00. The repair shop suggested that the rims are actually powder coated and cost to powder coat is $800.00. I would appreciate some feed back from you guys.

My rims were pretty chewed up when I bought mine earlier this year. I did a few coats of plastidip and it seemed to cover it up pretty well.

They re easily repaired with scotchlok pads and a small die grinder....you just keep goin round the perimeter with higher grits. Get them at your local body shop paint supply house or medo tool exchange. When done 2 coats clear coat and those babies are like the day they rolled off thE showroom floor.

I am a big fan of having them powdercoated and $50-$60 per rim seems to be the going rate. I had mine done in June '12

Beaner, your making me drool. Link for your rims? The lip for them is simply, perfection.

The only reason I havent powdercoated my rims yet is the fact that they are factory. No point IMO, I just experimented with Plasti-Dip.... Now if they were aftermarket..........

I say paint.

Powdercoating requires the wheel to be heated which can impact the molecular integrity of the metal.

Ok, so bad analogy. Still nothing I would be concerned with. Wheels and bike frames have been powder coated for years, and I've yet to hear of a failure being attributed to the process. If you know of an example I would be interested in see the data.

Wow.. and for years I thought mine was made of steel (oven) and not an aluminum alloy..
Love the knowledge acquired here!

Powder coat is more durable than paint. I have an Eastwood kit and powder coat everything I can. Have done a few sets of wheels too. Looks great and holds up great.
Different materials friend...Also, ovens aren't subject to thousand-pound loads while spinning hundreds of times a minute.

6061-T6 aluminum alloys lose about 5% structural rigidity when heated to 400° for 30 minutes. This comes directly from Alcoa.

People powdercoat wheels all the time and most never have issues. I'm just saying consider all the pros and cons.
