Default Puncture repair experiance

Well it looks like my near side rear tire has a puncture, tire warning light this morning second time in 7 days and the tires is down 10 pounds again. So the next question is where would you take this to get repaired bearing in mind the 'tire sensor'. Can a Costco or Tire center do this effectively without screwing up the sensor, what do i need to tell them to do? or is it best to have the dealer fix it? I gues the same question for if they need to replace the tire can i use the existing sensor or do I need to get a new one re-calibrated. I know when they usually fix tires they unscrew the valve and throw it, thats where i think there may be a problem.

Thanks all for your help

Personally, I would feel better having the dealer fix it. You should have more recourse through the dealer if they screw up the sensor. Wherever you take it, make sure they have dealt with tire pressure sensors before and have the proper equipment to deal with alloy wheels with low profile tires. There should be no need to replace or recalibrate the sensor after fixing the flat or replacing the tire. Just make sure they use the same valve stem core since it is aluminum to prevent corrosion.

Take it to the dealer. I had one of my tires plugged for like $20, they did it perfectly. Since it doesn't cost a lot anyway, theres no reason to take it to a discount place. Just don't let them talk you into getting a new tire, unless the leak is on the sidewall. I've driven a few thousand miles on mine and it's fine.

I had a screw imbedded in the drivers rear tire also. The dealer would NOT touch the repair as they were afraid of patching a "z" rated tire. That seemed alittle silly to me but they did give me the name os a Michlin dealer and he had no problems removing and placing a patch on the inside. He is also the one that did the research for me on real "snow treaded" tires for our winter driving. I'm still waiting for the first good snow to see how she performs on the white stuff.

Thumbs up Re: Puncture repair experiance

Have yet to have problem with my tires, but the first thing that I did when I took delivery of my Roadster was to buy a good "Patch/Plug Kit" and threw it in the trunk. Hope I never need to use it.

Well, I had a slice in my rear tire and after going to 2 major tire specialist, I had to go to the dealer. The tire specialty shops said the 19" rims didn't work on their machines. As far a the sensor goes, when they have to remove the tire from the rim, they just unscrew the sensor and it drops into the tire. After that they just remove the tire and do a repair from the inside. They said that the repair may not hold, as it was a good slice but it has been two weeks and still OK. Like CrossfireLTD, I have a patch kit also, however the repair shops said that there was a good chance of separating the tread with the kit, so they never use the plug! I was in the city so I'll take there word for it, but if I was out on the highway I would probably use the plug too. Certainly before filling it with the DC sauce! Oh yeah! to put the tire back on the rim, you have to put the sensor in level (and as close and parallel to the rim as possible) and tighten it up holding it there. This way it shouldn't catch on the tire machine.

Seems like a bad week for punctures.... SASKINS was meeting me at my house the other night and we both just happened to pull into my street a the same time... Rounding the corner, we both started hearing this CLLICK CLICK CLICK from the rear tires of our respective cars... Much to our chagrin... both of us ran over some screws that some @#()#$#(% dropped or dumped in the street and punctured both of our left rears... Talk about a pisser...

That makes punture #2 for me and now I have a matched pair of patched rear tires...

Well the dealer wont touch the flat, NTB wont touch it, just tires wont touch it. Right now im screwed. Everyone I talk to says take it to the dealer as they wont take responsibility for the tire pressure sensor. The dealer is about as helpful as a chocolate fireguard and says they wont fix flats.. So if anyone has had a flar repaired in the DC metro area can you please advise me where you got it fixed. Im sick of paying .50c every seven days to inflate it from the 20's to the 30's :-). i have like 50% tread left so im not buying a new tire.
please help....anyone...Im located in Alexandria

Boy, that's a *****!
Tell them that you will remove the sensor, it's really easy. (see my post above) Just unscrew the stem and let it drop inside. That way they can't possibly catch it. After they see how small it is, they will more than likely have no issues putting it back. Either way, why not say that you will not hold them responsible if it is wrecked. What have you got to loose? I'll try to scan a pic of the sensor and post it by tomorrow if I can. When they see it, you will not likely get any trouble. Just make sure that you line it up as close to the rim as possible for re-assembly. It has a bend to it which you put closest to the tire. Good Luck!

Bob , I really appreciate the help.

Still not sure I undersatnd. Is the sensor attached to the valve stem? so when you unscrew the valve stem it unsrews from the sensor? if not, i'm unsure how the sensor attaches to the rim. sorry if I sound like im a complete retard I just dont want to go back to a tire place without a good explanation.

I just took a pic as I haven't got a scanner at home. As you can see it is attached as part of the valve stem. Hope this helps.

There's gotta be a place in your area... I had mine done at a company called American Tire... No problems and a 10 minute job $22.00... Left rear 19" OEM wheels. Hell that's how I found out we had tire pressure sensors when I first got the car... The kid who did the job said "hey you got tire sensors on this thing, that's cool".

this is the week for punctures!!! or some kind of tire disasters. tire sensor went on on the 405 (los angeles) in rush hour, and the steering was very hard to handle (you know, wimpy chick is driving). All alone on the side of the road, cost 85 to get a tow from chrylser because road hazard damage not covered. michelin dealer in beverly hills where i work refused to look at the tire for defects. i was traveling at 30 mph when the sensor went off, anyone who lives in l.a. knows the traffic is so slow at that time, the chrylser dealer and the michelin dealer asked me how fast i was going, i must have been speeding to get the damage. i am so frustrated with the service response i have received so far. i suppose i can contact the ntsb to look at my tire. i thought road hazards were covered on zero pressure tires.
I STILL LOVE MY CAR!!! I CAN LIVE WITH THE SINGULAR CUP HOLDER, SMALL STORAGE SPACE IN TRUNK (GOLF CLUBS FIT) CRAZY DOOR LOCK PROBLEMS, CUZ I SMOKED THE Z GUY WHO LIVES NEXT DOOR (another story).
i am just ranting because the service is not meeting the sale.

I had a piece of a wheel weight pucture a rear tire last summer. I was on my way from Atlantic City to Rochester NY. I stopped at the Chrysler dealer in Cortland NY. I was in and out in 30 minutes ($20.00). They plugged the puncture and checked the balance. Since then I have had no problems. It has not leaked and I have had it up to 100mph with no wheel shake. Find another Chrysler dealer.

I think you need to find another Chrysler dealer. I took my Crossfire in to my dealer earlier this week for a 3,000 mile inspection and oil change (I know, that's earlier than what the manual calls for, but they wanted to do it then). They noticed an abnormal wear pattern on the front tires, so they aligned the the front end and replaced both front tires. There was no charge for the tires, the alignment, the inspection, or the oil change. And they put me in a Pacifica for three days while they waited for the new tires to come in. There are some exceptionally good Chrysler dealers out there. Shop around for another one.

that has to be one of the smartest things i've read in here so far. i have a set in my tool box but never thought to put it in the "trunk".
thanks for the thought.

Just wanted to update you guys on my tire which was plugged.. turns out I'm going to have to replace it now. The plug did allow me to drive on it for 3-4 months now, but I've got a slow leak.. had to refill it twice since I got the plug.. been monitoring the pressure closely. I'm not too concerned since its so slow a leak, but will replace the tire just for peace of mind.
