what color is black?
I have a 2004 "black" crossfire. All I see for color options in this dark range is a "black" option. If you do not look close, or it is dirty (black is always dirty), or the light is poor it looks black. But mine does not look black in good light. It clearly has gold flake in it, and in good light it appears dark brown. Are all "black" crossfires this color. If it is such a dynamic color, why such a boring color name like "black"?
It is hard to believe it could have been repainted. All jambs match, peaking behind all the rubber and trim shows the same color. It was a one owner car, no mention of a color change, just a fun car for his wife. I have a sense of paint costs, if it was a respray I would guess it is a $10K job or more, why would someone do that? Any chance 2004 had a special black option?
No, and welcome to the forum.
Just a suggestion:

Do you happen to have any pictures that you could share? I'm actually planning to have my car repainted Obsidian Black Metallic (OEM Mercedes Benz color) later this year. From the sound of it your color is similar, although the Benz color has a silver flake in it, not gold. Just curious to see what your paint looks like up close.
If you contact Chrysler they can send you a build sheet for your car, the paint information is on there.
I am tempted to repaint mine Acrtic White (code 10) and leave some black accents (hood, spoiler, wheels).

That looks quite a lot like Chryslers Brilliant black crystal pearlcoat! They had it on the 300 and maybe some other models. Wasn't available for the Crossfire though.
Might have been repainted very early on i guess?

It's certainly possible the car was special ordered. Pretty much all manufacturers will comply with special order paint, especially if it's a color available in their current lineup. There was an article in Motor Trend about this several years back. It stated you can even special order a totally custom paint color on a base model Mustang. So it's not just a luxury manufacturer perk. Most Americans don't chose to custom order their cars, though as we are an instant gratification culture.
What color is the engine bay?
These cars were not clear coated under there and a respray would show a different shade of black. Some over spray of the clear coat shows though.

Well you definitly don't need glasses to see the metallic paint in your photo, that's for sure.
I'd say a repaint.
I think a special order paint color would be more likely available from a maker's home office plant. Since the Crossfire was outsourced to Karmann, I think it would be less likely to have offered such an option. Just my opinion.
I would also think a 1st. year production model would make it even more unlikely.
Just take your car to any reputable paint/body shop and they'll be able to answer your question in minutes.

My 2009 Challenger was painted that color. Looks like your car has been touched up and new clear shot over top.
If you post the Vin number I can run it to see if it has been altered.
