I know I'm preaching to the choir here but I'd like to reiterate a point. I've been using Hastings-branded oil filters (manufactured by Mahle) in my Crossfire since 2003. I was ordering some things online earlier this year so I added a couple of Fram filters since they were on sale and used one on my next oil change.
I changed my oil a couple of days ago and when I pulled the oil filter cartridge out, the Fram filter practically fell off. The seals on each end were complete mush and it slid right off the assembly. The Mahle filter takes some persuasion.
I put the second Fram filter in just so I could run some errands and drive to my parts store and pick up a new Hastings. Even after using the Fram to drive only about 15 miles, the seals on the ends were already degraded and it appeared I could scrape them off with my fingernail. Here are the two filters side-by-side.
Same here. I recently bought a Mann "knock off" from an eBay Seller. After inspecting the filter elements upon receipt, not sure I want to use them. I've got a pair of Mann filters coming later this week. When I have them, I'll compare to the "knock off" version & see if I can convince myself to use them.
My SE had a paper element in it. Had maybe 1000 miles on it, I changed the oil and filter when I got the car home. The filter had collapsed partly - made me concerned about if any filter material had broken off...
I posted about it on Facebook, got a lot of responses that said, "Normal, you are worried about nothing..." Not the people I'd go to for technical advice.
I buy all my Mann Fleece oil filters from Rob at Needswings
I usually split a 10 pak with James1549 at the Woodward Dream Cruise
I just used my last one last weekend NeedsWings Performance Products. Mann Fleece Oil Filter

The Mahle is a fleece filter and the Fram is a paper filter, paper filters are a no go in the Crossfire. Use only approved fleece filters, you get what you pay for.
Mann fleece filters, one used 2,500 miles and a new one. The so called fleece is a man made polyester material.

I know this is a slippery subject but just adding $.02 more; I've used Fram part #XG8481 (Fram "Ultra" Premium Oil Filter, "dual layer synthetic media reinforced with a durable metal screen...".) Found it @ Walmart awhile back, Made in USA & hopefully still is. (not knocking Mann or Mahle, just saying...Fram has various quality levels.)
WARNING; open before purchase because I found one that some Butt Hole had swapped the cheap Chinese model into the "Ultra" box.
