Default Oiled Engine Compartment

Coming home today oil indicator came on , pulled into a parking lot and found front of engine along with what the fan sprayed covered in oil. Oil was recently changed by son-in-law who probably overfilled by a quart. Bottom splash pan is full of oil from leak in front, no codes, car has been running flawlessly. Assuming he did overfill, pumped out thru dipstick and said he added 8 and 1/2 quarts of 0/40. Sprayed degreaser on engine, checked oil, added two quarts to bring it to full and started engine. I know it’s leaking in the left front of engine but as of yet haven’t found the leak. Help!! Any suggestions on the likely suspect😿

If he didn't put the o-ring in the proper place at the top of the threads of the filter carrier, a leak will result. There was a little paper sheet with the filter that shows the position the ring belongs in.

Note arrow "1", the position of the O-ring is critical; many beginners place it at the rim, in this photo, that means the ring is to the left near the rim and not in the channel provided.

Also shown is a collapsed paper filter (yellow arrow), which is why we do not use paper filters.

He used all of the orings and proper filter which I had supplied. The leak appears to be on the passengers side in front. May be unrelated to the oil change but he copped to not checking oil as it was added.

8.5 quarts is correct...I just changed my oil a couple of hours ago in the Rescue SRT checked after 8 quarts..ran the engine...was down a half a qt..added a half bringing total to 8.5 qt.

.

As explained earlier, do not use the top slot on the filter cap. That top "O" ring goes in the SECOND slot on the top. This has happened to many members who changed their oil before. Second slot not the top slot. Be careful tightening the cap too much, you might crack it (lets hope this is not what happened?).

Proper tightening torque is 25 N-m. Cap has this stated on top.

One of the O-rings goes up into the filter cartridge cap at the end of the stalk. This requires the filter cartridge to be dis-assembled. (Click Link) I don't ever do that because of the risk damaging the filter cartridge. Nearly all of us don't install that O-ring.

It is possible that the Filter housing itself is leaking. This could require a new filter housing to be installed. Much bigger job, but it does happen. Look at this YouTube on replacing the filter housing.

If the oil leak is coming from the PS (passenger-side) of the engine, could be from the following:

1) Major Valve Cover Leak - You may need to have new valve cover gaskets installed.
2) Leak from Dip Stick - Possible the dip stick was not inserted completely. Requires a small amount of force so the O-ring located at the top is sealed against the dip stick tube. Or the dipstick is leaking from where it is mounted into the block. Could have become dislodged or cracked where it is mounted. Is the dip stick even installed? I hate to go there, but stranger things have happened!

Your oil leak is a major one. Be careful driving car for any distance until you locate leak. Good luck with finding the source of the oil leak.

Removed the splash pan and cleaned up the mess. Checked oil level aok THEN......found dip stick gasket was actually split.
Replaced with a new gasket, it now snaps tight. I think we know where the oil came from. Drove the car over my little pit with cardboard under car, ran car for twenty minutes ; no leaks.
Still have to finish cleaning engine, a couple of qts of oil makes a hell of a mess.
Thank you all for your input, especially the dip stick gasket.
