Question BAS ESP light - ABS Module

Hi guys!, I have a problem with my xf '04, I have the BAS ESP light on, The dealer said that is the ABS module and I need replace it, the part number is 05140827AA. somebody told me that I can buy the part and plug it by myself, do you know if there is a guide or something to do it?

Antecedents: The BAS ESP light was on some days ago but I stopped the car turned the engine off and started again, the light did not come on. The next day the light was on again to run some miles I repeated the procedure, also the light go off, same day, but in the next trip I was driving my car slowly because the traffic then all the lights was on and the engine stopped. I started it immediately and the BAS ESP light was on.

I took my xf to the dealer and the did not found anything, the scan said all was ok, so i got back my xf normally, the next day in the first trip the light was on and I took my car to the dealer with the light on, then they made the diagnostics and that seems to be a sensor in the wheel, but they took another day to certify the diagnostics, but finally they to told me about the module; 05140827AA.

I have to say that the dealer forgot to reset the maintenance program after the last service. So my doubt is; Can the module failure cause the car stop?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ricardo

I don't think it would cause the car to stop. Actually if you think about it, it would cause the car to *not* stop!

You sound like you're not entirely certain that your dealer is competent to diagnose the problem, so there's no harm in going to get a second opinion. If the problem caused all of your warning lights to come on and the engine to quit I would guess that the BAS/ESP light coming on is just a symptom of a larger problem.

My ESP/BAS light started coming on when I accelerated. The dealer diagnosed a failed internal steering angle sensor, part no. 5101115AA. Since your dealer has narrowed the problem down to a specific part, I would say that the diagnosis is correct and you need a new ABS module.

A link to the maintenance manual for the Crossfire was posted on this forum a number of months ago. Hopefully someone can provide a current link for you. If not, I'll go through the downloaded copy I have to see what needs to be done (the manual is rumored to be 3,000 plus pages so this could take some time).

I agree with bobs that the ESP/BAS system would not cause your car to die. I also had an incident when my car died on me. Problem turned out to be a loose lead to the battery (didn't find out which one though) so you may want to check to make sure both pos and neg leads are securely attached to your battery.

Thanks guys!
If it is possible you give me a link to down load the maintenance manual, I will appreciate it. I think I going to start changing the ABS module.

Thanks, Ricardo

This sounds like the problem I had a few months ago. Wet, snowy morning and I spun the tires a bit pulling out of the parking lot at work to go to the bank. All those wonderful lights came on as did yours. My spoiler also came up and I couldn't put it down. Felt silly sitting at the drive thru teller with my spoiler up. Only until I turned the car off could I retract the spoiler. I tried to re set the Bas ESP light as the manual instructed and no luck so after lunch I made an appointment to have it checked. By the way the manual does say if its a serious ESP problem your car may have power issues. Mine never did. So for about six hours when the car was started, lights would come on and the spoiler would go up. I come out from work, start the car and everything had returned to normal. I waited a few days to make sure and cancelled the appointment. So far (KOW) so good. The other day I spun the tires in the rain and the ESP light lit but went back out when the car stopped swerving. Good luck with your issue.

Before you panic and spend some cash, check your owners manual (2004 Coupe, page 76). If the battery has been disconnected or dead then it is possible that you need to reset the light. I would try this first. Start the car and while parked and the wheel in the center position turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way back to the right and then back to center and the light should go out. This resets the sensors, if the light comes back on then get the dealer to check it out.
I had disconnected my battery to check a wiring problem and the light was on when I hooked everything back up. I thought I messed something up, looked in the manual and this is normal.

Good Luck,
CobraMike

Unhappy Re: BAS ESP light - ABS Module

I'm a new Crossfire owner (2004 Ltd Coupe w/ 22,000 miles). I have experienced several times when my ABS/ESP warning light would come on and the car would not allow me to shift out of park after startup. The only way I could move the car was to insert a tool into the little door/hatch on the gear selector plate and manually release the transmission from Park. I have found that on start-up, if the ABS/ESP warning light does not stay on after starting then the transmission shifts normally.

Has anyone else had this problem of locking up of the transmission selector?

The "limited power output" would be the 5,000 RPM lockdown. Some cars experience this, others (like mine) do not. I can pull out the fuses to the esp controller and suffer no ill side effects other than the BAS-ESP light going on in my dash. Other people have everything from inoperative spoilers to the above mentioned 5,000 RPM cutoff.

The two times my Crossfire did "it" the spoiler went up and had to be manually lowered. I felt like an idiot in the bank line with my spoiler up. So far it hasn't happened again but I am having the same issue with our '04 Mercedes. They are replacing a steering angle sensor next week which I hope clears up the problem. No I'll affect on performance but its nerve wracking to my wife who drives the car.

isja just saw your post, sorry. My car never went to the dealer, it corrected itself. However we have na 04 Benz that has basically the same set-up and when we bought it the same thing happened. It took two trips to the dealer to have it fixed but it was the steering angle sensor.

I must say, this forum is awesome. I have had my 05 XF for about 2 months and love it. Then, the other day I got the dreaded "Check Engine" light. Did a search on this forum and found out that I could disconnect the negative battery terminal and possibly clear the light. Well, it worked and the light did not return. Then today I decided to take her out on the road and the BAS ESP light was on....I thought, oh no, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come...so, I went straight back home and did another search to find out that the BAS ESP light will come on after disconnecting the battery! I followed the advise from the forum on resetting it and once again...saved by CrossfireForum. I also went ahead and purchased an Actron OBD II Code Reader and it says I have no errors.

Talking Re: BAS ESP light - ABS Module

I would ask the dealer to provide you with some support in case the module is not it. If they tell you to replace it and they are wrong, do they not install the part or do you pay for their DIAGNOSIS. Troubleshooting is hard and sometimes its hit and miss. Just a thouught, W DY

This spring I was driving my '04 Xfire and suddenly the speedometer went to zero, the rear spoiler went up, the car dropped into low gear and most of the car's warning lights came on.
The first suggestion I had from a Chrysler service person was a low battery. That was replaced and same issue.

I had the Xfire hauled to the dealership some 20 miles away on May 5. Diagnosis is the ABS controller. It has been on backorder with about 2 week updates being offered. Yesterday the expected due date was moved to October. I secured the part number from the parts department and may have located a couple of places that have the part. Dealership said the cost of the part would be $1000 but the part listed on the other sites were both $199.

It's been almost 2 months and no Xfire! Dealership called today to see if I was interested in trading it in and they offered to make the trade in value as in "running condition." I haven't pursued that at this time.

Hunt down a USED one---several crashed cars now----just make sure the part does not come from a flood car!!!! That part is out there!

Edit: Just went on line @ www. car-parts.com---several there for as little as $50 plus shipping. Call several places. The salvage yards will work with you to get the right part.

the problem is your abs module you have 3 options to fix
1. replace at dealership around $1,900
2. order an new abs module on a mopar web site around $800
3. replace with a used abs module $ 250

I replaced with a used one and it works fine you can buy at a local junk yard or on ebay
