Cool Headlight HID Mod

I'm starting a new mod today.
Basically taking the OEM HID set up out of a new lexus and swapping it into our Projectors.

It will be Hella Gen 3 Ballast with 4,300k D2S Bulbs.
It will require a H7 adapter for those bulbs to fit, also a different clip to hold the bulb in place.

Has anyone else done anything like this?
It is supposed to be way better than getting HID Rebased Stuff like McCulloch.

First I've heard of it. IMHO, it sounds like an awful lot of work and expense. Unless, of course you're getting them for free. You can get a 4,700k McCulloch kit for less than $300 on ebay which is essentially a drop-in kit. A bunch of people on this forum (my self included) have them and the general consensus is that they work very well and are pretty easy to install.

If you decide you don't like them you can re-sell them here on this forum and get back 90% of your investment so your financial risk is pretty low.

Just my $.02

I agree with you on the money thingy.
I currently have the 6k McCulloch Set and they are way brighter than stock.
But the other day I was on the freeway and a Lexus passed me.
His lights were even brighter than mine.

You could get the whole set up for about $300 bucks on Ebay, not much more than the rebase set from McCulloch. And its not as much work as you think.

I'll post some before and after pics to show the difference.

What about SI's HID conversion kit, anyone try their stuff yet?

The Lexus HIDs were probably brighter because they were at a 4,200K output where you have a 6,000K output. The 4,200K will be brighter and whiter than the 6,000K. Just get 4,200K bulbs (about $130 last I checked).

I didn't wanna get a rebase set. I wanted OEM because the quality is going to be way better than Ebay stuff.

Lexus and BMW ETC all have pretty much the same setup (D2S or D2r) bulbs.

Color temp ! = brightness. The 4,200k bulbs will be brighter than 6,000k bulbs, but not as white. In order to get the color temp you want the bulb manufacturer has to put in additives that will absorb the yellow/red end of the color spectrum. The higher the temp the more additives. Your light will be whiter but not brighter. Best visibility is with 4,200k - 5,000k.

My 6,000k lamps are almost a little too blue and I will probably swap them for 4,700k bulbs when the time comes.

oem hid parts are MUCH higher quality than the bs mcculloch sells... they'll last longer, be more reliable, etc.

also, you can purchase brand new bulbs for $75 a pair from hidplanet.com and they also sell H7 adapters... all you need to add are oem d2 ballasts.

4,200K - 5K is as white as you can get without getting into the Yellows. The higher you go the more blue it gets, not white.

Well, I got the whole set from HIDPLANET... I'm also going to swap out our Stock Lens with a clear Projector. I'll get a better cut off line and a little more light output.
Parts should be here by Friday... Pics to come.

well then by all means, enjoy.

any reason you went with a tsx projector over something like an fx45 bi-xenon? they're at about the same price point and performance, although the tsx does give a better cutoff, you get the bi-xenons in the fx45 units.

if you have any questions regarding retroing in the tsx units, let me know... I'm happy to help (I have a good bit of experience in doing retros).

Its common sense...if McCulloch was the same quality but cheaper dealers would have used those instead of Hella or Phillips...
Also McCulloch is out of business... All that crap on EBay, is leftover stock.

Head over to the forums at hidplanet.com, and you'll see tons and tons and tons of stories of them failing...

Infact, go to most forums and you'll find this.

Granted, the mcculloch kits are some of the better drop in kits, but they're nothing compared to the quality of an oem set up.
