Default Miles to empty

Anyone know about how far you can drive once the low fuel light comes on?

I'm in Manhattan today (gas stations are pretty rare) and I've driven ~ 13 miles since the light came on. Should I be safe in assuming I can make it another 8?

How many miles depends on your mpg and how much gas you have left in the tank.

According to the manual, the gas tank holds 16 gal, and the light should comes on when there is 2 gal left. But i think i read something about "2 gallons of reserved gas??" (maybe I'm wrong) so does it means 16+2 or 14+2 total?

On my car, usually the light comes on after used about 13 or 14 gallons of gas. I never run out of gas, but one time I was able to sucks up 17 gallons of gas from the tank before I get to the gas station, so I believe there are at least 4 gallons left when the light comes on??

My low fuel light has always come on when I hit the 1/6th mark on the fuel gauge. Based on my gas mileage of 22-23 mpg of mixed driving, I would feel safe driving 40-50 miles. However, the key word is driving. I suspect that in Manhattan you may do a lot of sitting in traffic. Your situation may make it a close call.

You have about two gallons left when the light comes on...so, whatever mileage you average, is what you are going to get. I'm not sure how long it will take you to go 8 miles in Manhatten (from the several times that I've been there), but I don't think you will do it quickly. Good luck!

If it's 2 gallons, I should be ok. haha :-/

11 of the last 13 miles were 65 mph in 6th, so really only the last 2-3 were in traffic. My office is about 3/4 mile to the West Side Highway then I'm going to the gas station on the Palisades right on the other side of the GWB. So it should be ok once I get on the West Side Highway, plus I'm leaving later than usual so traffic shouldn't be that bad.

Just a heads up, it is hard on the fuel pump to run that low. I wouldn't suggest making a habit of it. I try to never go below 1/4 tank.

Oh I completely agree, I never do this. Just got caught in a bad situation since I live on a island (Long Beach NY) with one gas station and I was in a rush.

In my SRT6 which only averages about 25 mpg on the highway was able to go another 50 miles with no problem when the light came on.

I could think of 3 gas stations in Long Beach, they are in a row so i guess you can count them as one.

I can do 50 easy from the light coming on. The real question is how far can you go once the gauge is actually at zero?

Actually you're right, but I don't count Long Beach Blvd as part of LB.

Lucky enough to have a company car furnished to me every two or three years, I learned to carry a small gas can (for a few trips) and deliberately run out of gas to see how far I could go after the light appeared you never know when it will become critical and it varies with each car also if and when you do, try removing the gas cap to release the vacuum which will allow a small amount of gas to flow and you will get an extra 1/2 mile or so.

So the big question is, did you make it ? Or are you sitting beside the road somewhere waiting for AAA.

Yup, made it pretty easily. Needle was only 1/2 way into the red low fuel range when I pulled into the gas station on the north side of the GWB on the PIP.

Ha ~ one time I saw a minivan ran out of gas right at the entrance of a gas station in San Francisco. Of coz they pushed the car to the pump easily.

Wow! Walk, then take a bus, and finally the subway, then walk some more. All to get to work. Is it worth it? I would rather run out of gas and have to walk a country mile then have to endure that. It still amazes me that there are people that have lived in the city all their life and have never owned a car! It's like another world, the big city life. I hate driving in afternoon traffic for an extra 10 minutes. Sorry to jump off subject.

I drove because I had to be somewhere in the opposite direction of my house after work.

I usually take the LIRR then the subway.
