Default Question on check engine light and multi-function switch.

The Check Engine light on my '04 Crossfire had been going on and off for the past several months. I took it to the dealer today and they told me that the issue was the multi-function relay switch and that it needs to be replaced. The cost for the part alone was around $350. I'm not really sure what relay switch he is talking about. When I think of that, I initially think of the steering column and the switches in there. Does anyone know exactly what he was referring to?

Thanks!

I would have the dealer give you a lil bit better explanation and possibly show the part to you ! The only multifunction relay I can think of is the Relay Control Module which is no where near 350 bucks to buy. More info.....please !

I'll do that. When he calls back, I'll get some more info and also get them to show me the part they are talking about. Thanks!

What you want to know from the Crossfire Service Manual. It's part of the Windshield Wiper / Turn signal switch / Headlamp high beam etc..switch assembly.

MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH
DESCRIPTION
The multifunction switch and control circuitry (3) is concealed
below the steering column shrouds and will operate when the
ignition switch is turned to the ACC or ON/RUN positions.
Fuse 32 in the underhood accessory fuse block protect the circuitry
of the wiper system and the vehicle.
REMOVAL
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE
THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM
BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING
COLUMN, DRIVER AIRBAG, PASSENGER AIRBAG,
FRONT IMPACT SENSOR, SIDE IMPACT SENSOR, SIDE
CURTAIN AIRBAG, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT
DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE
THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT
TWO MINUTES FOR THE SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE
BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS
OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE
THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM. FAILURE TO
TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN
ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE
PERSONAL INJURY.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Page 19-25.
3. Remove the clockspring. Refer to Page 8O-94.
4. Remove the lower instrument panel. Refer to Page 23-149.
5. Remove the screw (1) attaching the speed control switch to
the multifunction switch.
6. Remove the bracket below the speed control switch.
7. Remove the screws (2) attaching the multifunction switch to
the steering column.
8. Disconnect the multifunction switch harness connectors.
9. Remove the wire harness from the steering column.
10. Remove the multifunction switch from the steering column.

I hope this helps.

So I'm clear on this, an issue with this switch could cause the Check Engine light to go on and off?! Or you're just saying that this is the only multifunction switch in the car so that's probably it?

what "code" is the CEL giving off? I think the most common one is P0410, you can search for more info... then ask the dealer if thats your problem.

So, here's what they told me. Note that this was the service manager, not the technician. The technician had left for the day when I picked the car up.
Diagnostic code is Stored Code 2023. I couldn't find that code anywhere. The description is Secondary Air Injector Relay Circuit Signal Error, which seems to relate to the P0410 error mentioned in an above post. The stated fix is to replace the Air Injector Module. I don't know what part this is to look it up and see how much it should cost, and whether it's a part that can be replaced fairly easily.

TIA for your help!

It might be that nice little air pump sitting on the front of your engine between the vaccume lines. The same pump that is affected by the P0410 error. On the SRT it is mounted on the drivers wheel well.
