I just bought my car on Saturday. I didn't get pulled over by the cops, yet! I work in law enforcement so I shouldn't have a problem! he he he... I did get asked in the bank drive-thru through the intercom what kind of car did I have? I started laughing! The woman said, "That looks like a porsche boxster." I said no it's a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire. She said it was beautiful. I drove off with lots of other customers in the drive-thru gazing at me driving away. It was a good feeling!!

What is the strangest reason that the cops have given you for being pulled over while driving the Crossfire?

This morning, on my way into work, a cop pulled me over, after he walked up to my window and I showed him my liscanse, for some reason he didn't ask for my registration, but then he asked the following:
"Sir, I've never seen a vehicle like this, is it a prototype, or some sort of concept car?"

Needless to say I was not expecting a question like that, so I told him that it's a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire. He asked me if they were still selling them, and I told him that the last one rolled off the asembly line in May of 2008, and told him that he might be able to get a used one, then he let me go on my way...[/quote]

I did get stopped one time about 4 years ago in my Viper for no front plate.
The OHP, Trooper also accused me of not wearing my seatbelt, and not having a "county" sticker on my rear plate (which I did).
I explained to him that the seatbelt originates over the drivers "right" shoulder instead of his left in the Viper, and that the belt is black, and I was wearing a black t-shirt at the time, and that may have been why he didn't notice I had my seat belt fastened. It must have been too much logic for him to "compute" because he wasn't buying it. But he was going to do me a favor and not cite me for it.
Then while writing me out a "warning" for no front plate, he asks me how I liked the Viper, and how fast I had it up to? That's when the real reason for stopping me suddenly became very clear to me.
I'm sure when he got back to the office to "clock out" he told all his fellow "Bears" about pullin a snake over.
If you can't tell, I have nothing but the highest respect for the Ohio Highway Patrol.

I want to take a moment in order to re-interate (sp?) the topic/sub-topic:
What is the strangest reason that the cops have given you for being pulled over while driving the Crossfire?

+fireamx has a good example of a weird reason to be pulled over, with the tale about being pulled over while driving the Viper.

you know christopher, I have hundreds of stories of pulling people over for one reason or another...litterally hundreds...and I admit I would never pull someone over just to see their car, but w/ that said, I have pulled people over to see their car, but they were speeding first, then I pulled them over...if they were cooperative, in other words, NICE, then I would admire their car and they were off w/ a warning, usually verbal warning...if they weren't so NICE, then you prolly know the outcome...
Oh, and now that you have arroused the "the cop" in me, driving is a privilege in the US, not a right, and we need not give you a reason for pulling you over, if we don't want to...my old MO was " driver's license, registration for the vehicle, proof of insurance please"...and from there it would be "the reason I stopped you, you were exceeding the posted speed limit and I am citing you for that infraction"....or " I'm giving you a verbal warning to slow down and do the posted speed limit"..."have a nice day". Is that strange or what???

The weirdest thing I ever got pulled over for. Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign... Apparently didn't 'burp' the car.... In my own apartment complex. Stupid.

there are some LEOs on this forum who might disagree with me, but IMO, that sort of thing happens to younger drivers far more than it does to those of us whose hair exhibits signs of "maturity" ... I got tagged with that and several other ticky-tacky violations as a young driver, but in recent years, I've had to really earn a traffic stop ...

I felt incredibly lucky last week, as I did the dumbest thing ever.....

I've been hunting for this STI that gets onto the highway around the same time as me after work.

Finally had the timing just right as we were both at a red light that goes onto the on ramp for the Thruway.
Slammed the gas, before I knew it I was going about 90 and a SUV was in the way so I quickly scooted around him. At this point the STI is gone and I'm getting off an exit for another road when I see lights flashing behind me. Well- that SUV I scooted around was a unmarked State Trooper. When he was walking to my car I was thinking OH ****!!....

He asked, "do you know why I pulled you over", I playing dumb said no officer. He clocked me at 80, I wanted to say that's it (lol), but I didn't. He asked for my license and registration.
My cousin gave me a PBA card and this was my first time using it and it worked like a charm. He didn't even go back to run my license or anything like that, I think he had another situation because he was gone in a hurry. On his way back to his car he said- "damn that car is fast".....

I felt so freakiin lucky I should have played the lotto. I thought for sure I was getting my car towed away.
Lesson I learned is I have to pay much closer attention when going 90 mph in a 55.....lol (I mean 80)

rodimus and SteveS, since Christopher will scold me for getting off topic again, I will be brief...the big thing we or I should I always watch for when seeing someone speed is whether they are paying attn to what they are doing...and younger drivers, sry, aren't always considering all the factors when they decide to break the law...they will tend to speed in congested areas, school zones, etc...older drivers seem to do it more on the open highway where it isn't so dangerous...if that helps...and believe me...I was always more of @ss chewer than a writer...just because I am a "motorhead"...sry Chris...

MMM... yea, i guess. i have discussed this with multiple people here in Chicago. They say that because my plates are out of state i will be scrutinized harder than in-state people. I stick out. However, knowing I'm only here for a year means that I should not get my plates changed, nor will I. Texas > Illinois.

P.S. In case there was question of maturity. This was my first violation of any kind (parking or moving) since before I was 18. I am not a reckless driver. I am way too calculated and analytical of a person to be reckless.

I've always said that an ounce of common-sense and a pound of courtesy goes a long way.

About a year and a half ago, I was driving my truck down a brand new 4-lane that might have seen 15 cars on a daily basis. Very lightly traveled, very straight road but it has a posted limit of 40 mph.

It was 11:45pm, and I wanted to let the truck stretch a bit, as I had just done some extra mods and wanted to give 'em the "butt dyno".

So, I'm clearing the slight hill when I see headlights oncoming. They were dim (characteristic of Crown Vics) but I thought, "nah, surely not a cop".

Surely it was.

The "red blur" which was my truck flew past him at around 115 mph. As I passed, I noticed the reflective vinyl stripe flash in the corner of my eye.

I saw him hit the brake lights, and I simply applied the brakes and brought the truck to a gradual halt, rolled down the window and turned the truck off.

He had turned around but wasn't code-3 just yet. He drives up behind my truck, gets out and does the usual inquiries... said he clocked me at 113 and was shocked that

a) I stopped without him even having to hit the light bar
b) He clocked me at 113 in a Ranger

To make a short story long, he seemed to appreciate the gesture of not eliciting a chase, or playing dumb. I owned up to it, admitted the wrongdoing, but he let me off with a light @ss chewing and then immediately started inquiring about the truck.

As a rule, I always do the following and it has kept me ticket-free, so far:
  • I ALWAYS stop before being chased, if I know I'm busted.
  • I always have the vehicle OFF when they approach
  • I keep my hands at the 10 and 2 position on the steering wheel UNTIL they have initiated conversation, so as to give the LEO peace-of-mind and he can know that my hands are NOT low, digging for a weapon. This seems to make a ton of difference. Even if you want to shuffle around looking for your registration and whatnot, DON'T do it until they approach. You know that you're digging in your glovebox for paperwork... but all they see is someone reaching in their glovebox in a dark vehicle. An officer at peace is a friendly officer.
  • Own up to the mishap. In my above situation, playing dumb would've just pissed him off. Unless it's a truly trivial ticket (36 in a 35), being mature about the situation will prove far more rewarding
I've been nabbed my share of times... but I always respect them and try to do everything in my power to make them feel like I'm not a threat to them. So far, so good.

When I got pulled over driving back from Vegas I stopped. The same thing happened, the officer appreciated the gesture and let me off with a warning...

This past time it all happened so quick there was no time. If I told him I was racing someone else he surely wouldn't have like that. So I felt in this situation admitting to going 80 was good enough. Thank God it worked out.

I don't have that much experience getting pulled over though. That was only my third time and my second time was for a broken taillight.

So your experience must come in handy...lol

I don't know the law in IL but I can tell you that here in CA if you are here two months and have a job you legally are required to get a CA plate ... it's not the sort of thing that will automatically get you pulled over but, still ... it IS the law and you could get a ticket for it ... and I did 6 months after I moved to CA

As for the maturity thing ... it's not a question of your actually BEING mature ... let me rephrase myself ... as a young guy, you're more likely to be pulled over for a ticky-tacky violation such as a rolling stop than is a guy like myself whose hair has changed from black to more of a graphite metalic with a clear tendency toward alabaster white ... you may, in fact, BE more mature than an older guy, but you still get stopped while he gets the pass ... fair? ... no ... fact?? ... sadly for you, yes.

Slightly off topic I suppose. But I'm new and don't know any better. I have not yet had the privlege of being pulled over, "not for lack of effort", in my Crossfire. But I have been pulled over a few times on my Harley. Once for really laying into it while trying to scare the crap out of someone who dared trying to cut me off in traffic. Needless to say it is very loud and garners a fair amount of attention. Anyway, I never got a ticket. Even after the officers found that I'm not licensed for motorcycles.I let it lapse several years back and never took the time to retest. Seems being a little older and riding a bike they would love to own helps. I don't really know the reasons why. I have been left scratching my head wondering how I somehow I eluded what should have been a big deal. Somehow I'm left to wonder that if I were pulled over in the Crossfire that I would be treated in the same manner. Sure, it's a fast looking car. But it also looks like an expensive, more mature looking sports car. Does it look like a mature sports car while going sideways in 2nd gear coming out of the Harley shop? Maybe not, but...
