Default Spoiler Problem With Pictures... check this out!

The housing cover on the spoiler is peeling. Someone told me not to worry because it is just a cosmetic problem and should not be a problem with the motor. When it comes to this car I always worry! I am afraid water will get in there. Check out this pcitures and let me know if this is happening to your cars. I have a Max care warranty with plenty of time left. Not sure if it covers this but I will certainly try to push the issue.

This is my first time posting pictures so hopefully the pictures work!

Thanks for the heads up, gonna go and check it right now.

Mine is fine. There appears to be a ridge, may even be a drain there. Can't see in this light. Once you get it fixed I would suggest using a leaf blower to dry your car after washing. It gets the water out of all the nooks, cranny's and hidden spaces. I'd also put some wax/polish on that area.

Mine is OK for now. It looks like the dark grey metalic paint is starting to peel on yours?? Anyone know how to match up that color?? It could probably be sanded and touch up if you can get the color. It wouldn't be that noticable since it's in a hidden area. I'm pretty sure that the Maxicare won't cover it.

Is that piece plastic or metal? I can't tell. Is there something I can do to fix it? Something I can buy at home depot.... like a filler or something? I would like to peel it back a little more and then put something in there to at least stop the peeling. And one day I will worry about painting it. The problem is I think that piece is plastic and I don't know what I could use as a filler. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it is plastic if I remember correctly. In my opinion it should not be peeling. That said there is a drain hole for water that would get into/under the wind area. If you were to work on it my advice is use a magnifying visor, fine tweezers and some utlra fine sand paper (what is it 400 grit? I forget now) I get my things at a jewelry supply place. If you did peel and sand down plastic, sealing it up would be the most important, but it shouldn't have done this in the first place. Would something like a rubbing compound work better? Is there a mild scrub for kitchen or shop use? Sanding with water will smooth the finish out too I think.

You know what go out and tap it some (with something a key maybe) you will hear if it is plastic or metal, it sure looks like metal; first because of the things bolted to it and second why would a plastic piece be painted? Wouldn't the color just be in the plastic to begin with? It looks like paint peeling off of metal to me.

I'm going to run for a public office, I just gave two opinions!

Any other thoughts on this? It is really bothering me! So you think I should peel some more until it stops and then sand it down? Then find some way to seal it? I am not worried about the looks of it. I just want it to stop peeling before it gets worse. Does anyone know if I could buy a whole new piece? Is there a part number I could order? Or would I have to purchase the whole motor and assembly?

Hi, Don't take just my answers as to what to do, keep bumping this get more feed back. From my reference pages it is called a Panel Spoiler part #5104929AA "Paint to match" in the $390.00 price range. The little pictures look to be a match. Should be metal as there is an entry next about Sheet metal and how long to refinish or paint one. All of this under the header of Luggage Lid.

Maybe your question would get more response in the exterior trim section?

I appreciate the info. I was thinking I could use a liquid metal filler... like that loctite stuff. Anyone else think this is a good idea to peel and sand off any excess. Then drip some liquid metal in there to seal it up and stop it from continuing to peel? I don't care if the colors don't match. I just want to stop it before it spreads further.

The biggest question I have... is it plastic or metal? I need to figure that out first before I do anything. I can't even tell what it is.

It looks and sounds like painted metal to me (95% sure). On mine, it looks like the paint actually puddled in some of the corners, and I see what appears to be spot welds in places. If it were mine, I would smooth the peeling out with fine sand paper and touch it up with some dark metallic gray paint. You could probably find a close match many places. Even brush on auto touch-up paint would work to stop the peeling. You can always paint it again later if you find a better match. I am wondering if the spoiler was opened when it was in a bind for some reason, like ice/snow built up, and that flexed the connection points and fractured the paint. You probably want to make sure that the metal under the paint isn't cracked also?

Surely you aren’t the only Forum member that has had peeling in that area. Also, does anyone know the paint match color for the area under the spoiler? We should all watch for this problem.

Great thought! Magnet works on mine! It's metal for sure! That's what is great about the Forum.

Thanks guys. I am going to peel it and sand it. Maybe I will get some of that plastic/metal sealer and touch it up. I think the water sitting in there caused problems so I want to seal it up.

You might want to take a air gun blow out the drain, if you didn't know there is a drain on each side and water will only stand in the cutout if it is plugged up, it drains out by the release handle on the rear hatch on a coupe same place on a roadster only not a hatch a trunk.

The drain holes are the in back. They are draining properly. It looks like some water still sits on the other side where it is peeling because the water doesn't flush back to the drain.

Looks like a couple of roll pin removals and a couple of nuts on each side and the spoiler and hinges will come out of you way so that with a bit of sand paper and some silver touch up paint from a local auto parts store, it could be good as new.....or better.

Did you come up with a fix?

No... didn't do anything to it. It didn't get any worse. I hardly drive the car and it never sees rain or water. Just wondering if I am the only one with this problem.
