Default Gas Pump Icon

The gas pump icon on the dashboard, which is supposed to come on in as solid light when you are low on fuel, has been coming on and flashing, and there is plenty of gas in the tank. Does anyone know what this is signaling?
Thank you

I could be wrong but I think it means the gas cap is open.... or at least it thinks it is open.

Yep. Remove and re-tighten your gas cap.
May take a few for it to reset.
Been there, got scared, done that, fixed it.

The manual said "Leaving the engine running and the fuel cap open can cause the CHECK ENGINE light to illuminate" so a loose cap is not your problem. I will keep lookin!

I bought a new gas cap in summer has been fine but now it is cold gas icon flashing when I start car to keep battery charged. Perhaps the seal on the new gas cap is not seating like original. I didn't have to replace cap just did it to keep up on maintenance on an old car.

Flashing means problems with the EVAP system. In time, the condition will set a DTC code and the "CHECK ENGINE" light will light. At that point, you can read the code - it will be one of these, which will point you in a direction to look. A 442 or 445 can be the gas cap. If you bought an off-brand cap with a seal that is not as thick or soft as the OEM one, you won't get the seal the system expects and a leak will be the result.

I'd guess it is a fault in the sending unit in the tank or a faulty connection in the circuit.

Be sure you tighten the gas cap until you hear the "CLICK". It has to be tightened to this point for it to seal properly.

He says Gas Pump icon not Check Engine icon.
He does not say if it starts flashing all the time or just every now and again.

could be the “float” located in the tank being stuck or worn
