Default Hit and run.

Five days in my new apartment in Huntsville and one of my neighbors hit my door. The idiot lives here I'm sure and I have a good idea who it was(no indisputable evidence yet). The police are no help because it happened on private property. They only offered to make a report over the phone for insurance purposes. I thought a hit and run would get some kind of investigation but apparently not. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

A hit and run is not an accident, it is a crime. I don't understand a police officer saying they won't investigate a crime on private property. They investigate if somebody breaks into your home, which is also a crime committed on private property. They investigate if somebody burns down your garden shed, which is on private property.

You did not have an accident on private property, somebody committed the crime of hit and run, it shouldn't matter where it happened. I would call and speak to somebody else, because if what you were told is true, they have just declared open season on all vehicles that aren't parked on the street!
Note the vehicle code does not differentiate between private property and public property in naming the offence. Besides, your f%#kin Chuck Norris, whoop some A$$.

Suggestion:
Go to utube and see the dentless repair video. YOu may be able to clear most if not all of it up. Woody

This "Private Property" crap is one of the more interesting things I've found since moving to Alabama. I don't understand it, and never will. If he had hit a child, would it be different?

Sorry this happened to you, but it seems to me folks in this state don't care for their own cars and even less for others. The term "flap-fendered POS" was invented here.

Wait until you have to dodge a flying piece of bumper cover when the duct tape lets loose on the interstate. I did.

Just for fun, search lawdata and read the vehicle safety laws for Alabama.

There are none. Tail lights (1). Stop lamp (1). Tread depth-no law on the books. It was repealed some years ago when the ACLU argued that it discriminated against the poor.

Wisconsin and snow really looks good most days...

call them back and tell them someone vandalized your car.........\

Indiana law, fender benders on private property is a civil matter, but a hit and run should be investigated with a report. So, I would go the vandalized route...it could have been a ball bat...LOL

Chuck, +1 on the paintless dent removal. I agree that they should be able to get that out. Wont hurt to have them look at it anyway. The scuffs will be the bigger problem. I hate inconsiderate dipsticks!!!

I'm 99.9% sure of who did it and he is a Marine! Going to police station to talk to them in person. I checked the law and its a misdemeanor unless you kill or harm someone.

I don't think paintless dent removal can remove dents with creases in them. I'll check out the video.

I live in dread of the same thing happening to one of my babies. As frequently stated, that's why I park way the heck away from anyone in parking lots (and usually come back to find a POS right next to my XF) and park closer to the passenger side, rather than the driver side, of other cars when I must. But nothing prevents some bonehead from cutting sharply and hitting you.

The only other thing I suggest is checking the alleged perps bumper for matching paint, but it does not look like he gouged you enough with his bumper. Hopefully, since you were parked, your comprehensive will cover this and your deductible is not too high. We feel for you.

He has matching rub marks on his bumper. The apartment complex is not allowed to tell me where the person lives so I am waiting for the person to come out and get in the SUV. Deductible is $500 so I am not going to report to my insurance. Looks like custom paint is inevitable, I have to try and see some kind of bright side to the situation.

Take photos of the damage/marks on his car and take pictures one at a time going back wards (or zoom out taking pics) or a movie of the damage on his car and zoom out, include the plate in the pics. Do this before he gets smart enough to clean up the marks.
Get the law to talk to him, maybe he will get the message, there again maybe not.
So he's a marine, your Chuck Norris no contest, right?

I'll confront him, but if he denies there isn't much I can do. The damage isn't that bad. What really irks me is the fact that he can't be responsible for what he did and the law here pretty much condones the behaviour.

CN, I have to ask:

where are you from and how long have you been in Alabama?

BS, you have the evidence, tell the police you want an officer at the scene, show him the evidence...but do, do, do take photos or a video of the evidence...if he's a Marine, he will own up to it...

I know your pain. I had someone slam into the driver's side of my car, while I was driving. Looked pretty ugly afterwards, but looks brand new now (after the body shop).

I've lived in Alabama most of my life but also have lived in Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Montana has been my favorite place to live so far and was out there for 7+ years.

I think the frag part may be correct considering the morals and judgement used in the situation so far. He's obviously not too bright, its pretty obvious when the entire week he has been parking next to me and all of a sudden he is parking in front of the other buildings when the space next to me is open.

I'd have to get a lab to analyze the plastic from his bumper and see if it matches up with the plastic rubbed onto my car. I'd like to believe that he would own up to it but so far he hasn't. I have photos of everything.

Sometimes your best pit bull CAN be your insurance company. Go ahead and sit down with them with your evidence and talk. Let them sleuth out the other guy's insurer, and they'll have them go after this jerk. That's what you pay them to do.

A parked hit & run does not go against your claim history as a moving offense.

I feel your pain. The Crossfire door is four feet of beautiful sheet metal. Even one little ding really sux.
