Default Rear End Noise after Rear Differential Replaced under warranty

Hi,

I hope all Xfire owners are doing well, and Xfires are having fun rolling down the road. I haven't posted in awhile, but I have read some of the posts.

I got my rear diff changed out under warranty 12 months ago at 19K miles due to excessive noise. My Xfire is a Ltd, with auto stick.

I went out on a run with her tonight and did not have the stereo on- just enjoying the noise she was making!

When I slowed down to make a hard right turn I noticed a groaning noise- so I put her thru the paces with hard turns at various speeds. The groan noise only occurs when making a right hand turn at a fairly severe radius turn. The noise eminates from the right rear of the car there is no doubt.

I am out of warranty on 10-4-09 (of course)- if the diff is the problem again do you think Chrysler will take care of me on this? I still only have about 26K miles on her even now.

Any other ideas on what may be causing the noise? I don't see how the rear diff could be bad again with only 7K miles.

Thanks for any and all help.

Don

No brakes used at all when the noise happens.

Possible wheel bearing or tire going bad when you shift the weight to that side.

Even though you may have directional tires, rotate them side to side to see if the noise changes or goes away. Sounds like a tire or wheel bearing.

Jim-

I will use the brakes light and hard next time I run her- probably tomorrow, I don't think it is a rotor- or pad, as we just took them out to inspect last week.

Who knows though, thanks for your help.

Tires brand new on stock wheels and stock sizes, less than 4K on them. I thought as you possible wheel bearing????? Is there a way to test a bad wheel bearing- on 26K on the car.

Thanks

bearing check,, jack up wheel see if it moves when you pull and push top and bottom,,, side movement will not tell you because of steering,, again if u have a small amount of movement ,,the bearing could be loose or bad, jim

Just because a tire has 4K on it, doesn't mean it can't have a problem. I've seen a tire just put on have a noise problem.

I have replaced my share of hub assemblies on cars, just never on a Crossfire yet. A bad hub assy, most of the time, will not show up on a lift, will not have play in it, etc... 99% of the time, if you are turning left, the right side has the problem, and opposite for the other side. When turning left, you are shifting the weight to the right causing the defective hub assy to magnify the noise. I say 99% because I have been tricked with that theory and ending up replacing both sides. Remember when you are turning, you are not only shifting weight, but your are putting sideways pressure on those bearings as well.

You need to be sure you don't have a tire problem before any effort is put into diagnosing or replacing wheel bearings.

Good Luck, James

Default Discovered the Problem.........

After putting her thru the paces in an empty parking lot, when turning the steering wheel to max right turn- I heard the noise- went back thru the paces with hard right and brake engaged heard the noise again.

Turning the wheels to hard left with and without brakes no noise.

Now concentrating on hard right turns as soon as I heard the noise I stopped the car- got out with steering wheel turned hard right, the tire is rubbing the inner wheel well!

These are stock size General UHP new tires- I inspected the wheel well (passenger side front) and does not appear to have any diffence from the driver side, I am baffled as to why it is rubbing.

My friend has a repair shop so when I get a chance I will put the car up in the air with the tire off to see what is going on, never wrecked, haven't hit anything.

One thing the stock Contis tire tread was not as agressive as the Generals- so the noise must have started when I put the Generals on but didn't notice as I usually have the stereo on.

The good news is there isn't any damage occuring to the wheel well or tire- and now I know that it isn't the rear end or bearings causing it!

Thanks for the feedback- if I discover what is going on with the wheel well I will let you know so if it happens to yours you know what to do.

I know this sounds crazy, but even though two manufacturers make the same size tire, that doesn't mean that they measure physically the same size. They should be the same, but many are not.

James, I first heard about the Generals from other members here on the forum- not one who intalled them mentioned rubbing the wheel wells.

What did the bad rear end sound like. I have a wop wop wop sound as I am rollimg around 35-40 MPH. Seems to become quieter when I get up speed 70-90 mph but hear it when I brake down to the slow speeds again. If it is the differential will Chysler fix it under the 7year/70000 mile drive train warranty .. I am third owner but she only has 37000 miles on her 2004 coup body. Could it be a bad wheel bearing? Have some kind of rather new off brand "Kohoo" tires on it. Directional rotation.
